I think some people (like my wife) just don't want to add "preventative bike maintenance" to their mental to-do list. The same way as I don't want to add "personal finance management" to mine.
So I DGAF about what bank account, investments, insurance or mortgage I have - I just do not care, even if it saves or makes me money. And she just wants a bike that works and is comfy. So we split the work :)
