  • Always take my own bike out to Mallorca but thinking of hiring on this occasion. I'm staying just outside of Palma (Coll d'en Rabassa), anyone got a recommendation for decent hire place?

  • Bikehead were good to us a while back. They also do delivery and pick up.

  • Max Huerzeler are by far the cheapest and have the most rental stations. Bikes are from a German brand part owned by Merida (who also part own Specialized) with Ultegra/DT Swiss/Fulcrum groups and wheels on them https://www.bikebiz.com/features/huerzeler-bicycle-holidays-mallorca

  • I'm going with bikehead next year jakemcree. im over the faf of bringing my own bike when you can get awesome rentals for fuck all on the island

  • I would heartily recommend pro cycle hire in porto pollensa as the bikes they have are superb. Colnago master anyone...drool

Also have ridiculous bike porn on the shelves as well.

  • Cheers all, Bikehead looks decent. @swedeee Yeah completely agree, love riding my own bike but it can be a real faff.

  • Really recommend these guys https://rad-international.de/en/home/. Really good Canyon bikes and were a fair bit cheaper than other places I came across. Based in Peguera.

think i might go for these. seem good value

any others I should be looking at? my godparents live in esporles so palma, soller area all good

  • Thinking about a trip to Majorca this winter and figure having some local knowledge and organisation makes sense. Anyone have any recent experience of cycling holiday companies?

  • I won an auction for a Stephen Roche trip many years ago (2012?) at CTT Champs Night and had a great time over there. It was helped by the fact I knew some of the guys and gals from Hot Chilli that were also there the same week, ie. I had a top 'rehydration' buddy in the form of a certain @fasteddy

For a first trip it's a good idea - takes a lot of stress out of organising and minvans can get you to the good stuff quicker. I'd probably DIY it if I went again simply because I've got a feel for the island and can manage the self-supported stuff pretty well.

  • Cheers, sounds good. Although the news in the past few days has made this less appealing.

  • anyone got a recommendation for a holiday apartment in majorca (sleeping 6-8, bike storage, ideally with a pool, in the NE of the island)? I'm sure I can find a bunch on airbnb but always good to get a personal rec

  • You may well have sorted this now - but i'd try contacting BikeVelo, ask for Ciaran. I went back and forth with him on a few quotes and ended up in a 4* hotel in Pollenca for a decent price!

  • Not sure if this is the right thread ….

Just signed up to the Majorca 312 2023.

Never cycled this distance or climbed so many meters before. I’m excited to drive a strong training regime through winter!

Is it worth bringing my own bike, or would hiring one be the easier option?

While I can ensure all the setting out of a rented bike matched my newly bike-fit set bike at home, will it be too much of a difference and cause issues on such a long ride?

Edit: I will be travelling with my wife and infant child. Definitely hiring a car.

  • I can't really comment on the specifics but I would always take my own bike if its possible.

Especially for an event and extra especially if your bike has been properly fitted like you say.

  • @CheBeef

I'd always use my own bike. You'll know it, know how it handles, have it set up with the tyres you like, bars and tap you like, saddle you like, fit will be right. You'll know how to fix it if it goes wrong, have the bottles in the right locations and the Garmin mount and lights or whatever sorted out. It'll all be "familiar" and unfamiliar is not really what you want from your bike during an event.

If it was shorter or you were less serious about it or you could ride the hire bike for a long time beforehand I wouldn't bother with it.

Mind you, carting your own bike around does suck so make sure you have a good case in advance and have a lot of time (and beer) to pack it.

  • Cheers,

I think based on @stoo61 and your feedback I will bring my own.

I looked at bike hire out there, and while the day rate may be cheap, I would need to hire for 2-3 days in order to collect, setup and return the day following the event.

On this basis it’s way more expensive then hiring a box and paying BA.

I’ve packed my bike in a box to travel earlier this year so have a fair idea on how not to do it (chipped paint on top tube)…

  • Bike box counts as normal suitcase with BA if it's under 23kg

  • I've assumed your bike isn't full integrated...if so just pop it in the bin and rent.

  • Nah -SuperSix Evo 2018.

  • Oh - well that will do just dandy!

  • Anyone got any car hire recommendations in Majorca? Going for five days over Christmas and just got quoted €195, which seems a little excessive for a Fiat Panda.

  • Not specifically, but for the French thing we did, Budget was far cheaper than the other guys.

  • Got one sorted for £52 and £12 insurance for the excess, etc. so I don't get stitched up. Now to see if there's anywhere open to hire a bike!

  • There's probably no fuel left on Mallorca so you might just be sitting in it making brrm brrm noises anyway.
