I was thinking to myself post-commute this morning that the so-called summer noddergeddon phenomenon is probably much more akin to a variation on the broken window theory. the presence of sub-standard social behaviour begets more sub-standard social behaviour.
In my example as more inexperienced cyclists come out when the weather improves the average level of cycling proficiency on the roads drops a little but enough to be noticeable and as it does regular commuters see the dodgy undertakes, the shoaling at the lights, the risky overtakes, the red light jumping and all the other shit and start to become more lax in their own behaviour because that's the new 'acceptable' standard.
then all of a sudden if feels like you're the only person on the road who has ridden a bike before and everyone else is behaving like their dad ran them up the street and gave them a push off to get them going for the first at the start of that mornings commute.
in Races this is probably amplified. a handful of unapologetic dickheads who always act like twats start to do dodgy shit and get away with it a few times and the people behind them start to think "why am I being considerate and getting nowhere while this guy acts like a dick and gets ahead with no repercussions" so they start acting like a twat as well and they get away with it, so the person behind them thinks "why can't i do that?" then before you know it there's a pillockton of the dickheads shoaling around a horse on a public road at over 20mph

That horse video is very shocking. Not just the behaviour, but the sheer number of riders riding like massive dicks- a few bad apples is one thing but I make that at least 10 riding like utter knobs.
