Android phones, apps and tablets

  • Can anyone recommend a decent app for sat-nav style cycle navigation? I.e. for a handlebar-mounted mobile phone.

  • Or google maps.

  • Anyone know of an app that will tell me the bandwidth of my wifi?

There are about a million variations of 'wifi analyzer' but they only seem to do signal strength.

  • If you mean a speed test app, try OpenSignal which does WiFi. The problem with this is it's also test of your internet connection and your WiFi might run faster than your Internet

If you literally mean bandwidth (i.e. how many MHz in the channel(s) you are connected to), the signal strength apps show you that. It's most likely a 20 MHz channel, fwiw. Beyond that, there are lots of specialist tools. But it's really nerdy.

  • I have a samsung galaxy s7 and in the last few days it has switched off randomly and not switched back on until I plug it in to charge and leave it for a while.

The first time it happened my battery was at about 13%, second time it was at least 15% (because the screen hadn't dimmed) but I think probably closer to 30 or 40% (wasnt paying close attention to it) and today it was at 36%.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is this fixable?

  • Has anyone had problems with Signal? Like draining the battery in dormant mode?

  • Last year's Samsung A5 ticks all those, available for a bit over £200 from reputable places.
The new A8 looks excellent but is >£300.

  • Got the G6 in the end. pretty please with it so far.

  • Fair. Didn't realise how late I was...
Have Motorola got their act together? Their phones of a few years ago were rather lacklustre...

  • It's getting good reviews I think. £240, 64GB/4GB, dual camera, USB-C, fingerprint sensor and all that jazz. I like it.

I know what you mean though, I inherited a 2nd gen moto G for a while and it was annoying.

  • Just migrated from apple because I need dual-sim so got a J7 prime...

First couple of weeks have been fine-a couple of system hangs, now had the screen become unresponsive/go black. Did the forced reset and came back, but in the 5 years I used iPhone I never had these kind of glitches and I'm not too impressed and CBA with it being like this all the time.

Google shows it's pretty common with Samsungs generally, so not just a question of OS.

Anyone with experience-is this just going to get worse or is it liveable? I can still send it back so...

  • I've had no issues with phones which aren't Samsung.

Tbf, I've never owned a Samsung but got one for my daughter and it didn't go well. Eventually replaced with a Moto G.

I've supplied 3 Moto G and one Hauwei for my immediate clan, no issues. Now using a OnePlus which is also flawless so far.

  • Ah thanks. Will prob check out Moto G dual sim options then and punt this back... not tied into a contract or anything which is a blessing.

  • I got a G6 Play a couple weeks back as my nexus boot looped again. The play is the base model but I think its pretty decent for the price. The full monty g6 would be a decent phone.

  • I've been using a OnePlus 3T with dual sim for the past year or so and never had any issues with system hangs, etc.

  • Xiaomi official store at alixpress doing 25% off on Redmi note 5, got myself black 4gb version for £160

  • I'm looking for a very simple app that I can't find regardless of searching.

I've got an old android phone docked in my living room that I use for controlling music, heating, lights, etc.

When it's docked I want it to be used as a clock. It's the other side of the room so needs to be fairly bright. The built-in Android Daydream or whatever it is called is too dim as are a variety of apps I've tried (or they just don't work when the phone goes into standby).

    Any suggestions?

  • Wifi Analyzer from farproc shows bandwidth, in the graphical view of all channels and also in the detailed channel list.

  • My "new" redmi 4x comes with a Switkey keyboard. I like it compared to previous Samsung but I have seen some people consider it a security risk, storing regular words, paswords, account number etc. Is this a real concern?

  • I've only notice passwords get stored if you accidently type them into a non password box and do one of the actions that saves words Although it's easy to delete it from saved words straight after and basically all my passwords are saved on this device anyway already.

  • It's nice and very useful, but I guess some of that usefulness comes at a small security risk. Swapping keyboards takes seconds on android, so you could use a different one for looking at porn or whatever anyway.

  • PhotoScan by Google appears to be brilliant. Little things.

  • Some reviews on the playstore mention poor resolution- what's your expereince?
