  • Nightmare :/ She seems to have reached a dead end, road just turns into wild scrub.

  • Nice. I have a small feature request, maybe you can add it later.
    To override the index page's (not a riders detail) CSS with:

    #content {
    width: 95vw;
    }

    #content > iframe {
    width: 95vw;
    height: 75vh;
    }

    Just to make the site a bit more suitable for bigger screens. I'm using it with the Stylish extention but it could be nice to add it to your extention.

  • That's really cool, seems to work!
    Would be nice to be able to do similar on the 'Race Flow' page and see riders lines separately or compare one against the other...?

    Looks like Tanja is pointed the right way now at least.

  • Its such a strange situation. Did she think she was back on route at Gibbonsville perhaps?

    Is she allowed to get a lift back to where she went wrong or does she have to pedal back there?

    Terrible for her. It looks so simple from here but if her GPS has gone haywire it could be so easy to get hopelessly lost in the dark of the night, sleep deprived, exhausted and in the middle of nowhere.

  • She seems to have reached a dead end, road just turns into wild scrub.

    And she's continuing to walk East. At least she's on some sort of path (according to MyTopo maps).

    If she keeps this up for another hour or so she'll get to a gravel road. Then she just needs to head North or East (or slightly SE) and she'll be back on the route.

    She's going to have a good story to tell.

  • Would be nice to be able to do similar on the 'Race Flow' page and see riders lines separately or compare one against the other...?

    A way to select a rider and have their race flow line horizontal would be good. Kind of like the way that the time behind/ahead comparison thing at the bottom of a Strava Fly-by page.

  • Normally it's hippy who gets lost like this. Maybe the tracking is mixed up and pink TH is really hippy, whereas blue TH is Tanja?

    Seriously, I hope she'll be all right. It sounds plausible that there's some issue with her connectivity.

  • Looks like Matthjis has visited the hospital and drug store in Hamilton 15 hours ago, but has continued normally after that. In a hotel now.

    How many paper maps for the Transam? You'd need a trailer!

    Also there is nothing quite like a GPS to tell you where you are on a map, rather than having to work it out. I think her tech must be broken. No doubt we'll find out when she returns to the 21st Century with some wifi signal and a working smartphone.

  • Is she allowed to get a lift back to where she went wrong or does she have to pedal back there?

    Lifts are only allowed due to a serious mechanical (that stops you from riding).

    If she wants to complete the full route then her only option is to get back on route and cycle all the way back to the 93/43 junction and then turn around again.

    If she has suffered a mechanical whilst off-route she could, theoretically, get a lift to Wisdom to get her bike fixed. She could then cycle from Wisdom back to the 93/43 junction and then continue the route from there. The rules aren't completely clear about this as they assume that mechanicals will be suffered on the route somewhere. But I don't think anyone would begrudge her sorting it out this way given the torrid time she would have had over the last 12 hours.

  • Also, 14hrs kip for Michael Rushton. Looks like he's blown.

  • Royal fuck up.
    Also means dq as didn’t complete route. (In my eyes)

  • Depends. If she goes due East from where she is now and hits the official route it's a 32 mile ride back to where she went off route, so a bonus 64 miles riding. All in it'll be almost a complete day lost, but she'd still be in it having completed the entire route.

    [EDIT] Turned slightly North and then stopped. 3am, middle of nowhere, not fun.

  • Yeah she’ll have to go back to where she went off route. But I assume she won’t, maybe she will we’ll see.

    Never understand how people fuck up like this.*

    *touches wood

  • Just guessing, but looks like Tanja has a Garmin Edge 1000 and no dynamo hub, so might have run out of power, though she has had a long break at Lolo hot springs lodge to charge everything less than a day ago.

  • Indeed, trying to rejoin the route from memory and turning too early is the only thing that really makes sense. If her GPS was working (and she had the route line on it, even with no mapping) she should have been able to get back to where she'd deviated from it.

    Without the GPS working she would have seen the right turn (coming back North) in Gibbonsville and seen it was signposted Wisdom and may have thought that's the one.

    From there it's a horrible game where doubt and uncertainty creeps in. This isn't the kind of road I expected, etc and the bad/panicked decisions begin.

    I hope the latest tracker updates are her trying to find a suitable bivvy spot. Sleep (assuming she can) and then reassess in daylight.

  • Also, check out the horrible hair pin climb she had to do after turning off the 93 at Gibsonville, as she crossed the state border.

    Ooof.

  • Just saw that this wasn't the first time she got lost, she took a wrong road after Whitebird too, but that was straighter and probably faster than the actual route. Must be some problems with gps indeed.

  • Ah, Garmins. Trying to find a better route for you than the one you were planning to ride.

  • Garmins are generally fine.

    It's routing on Garmins that's a problem.

    Follow the pink line. If you deviate from it, backtrack. If you try and be clever then you're at the mercy of the Garmin's routing algorithms which seems to be written entirely by spider monkeys high on crack.

  • Don't use routing, just follow a gpx. Learn how to use the garmin before you do a race like this! Some of these mistakes are so avoidable. Also Garmin 1000 for this seems like a poor choice, terrible battery life.

  • Whitebird

    Lots of people have got that wrong in previous years.

    As for giving her directions, that's a tricky one. I guess they'll be 10 different suggestions in reply to that FB message. Not sure what the rules say about outside assistance like that.

    From where she is now I'd head due East across the scrub for about 3km (and down a hill) until one hits the gravel road Rock Creek Rd, then North about ~1.5km, turn East onto Clemow Ln for ~3.5km. North (left) @ T to stay on Clemow Ln for ~2.5km, follow it round to the East for ~2.5km until you hit the 278. Then decide whether to go left (North) to go back to Wisdom (5km) and reassess (with possible backtrack, alternative is scratching/DQ).

  • Indeed, garmins are usually fine, when just following a route, I've found my way with one of those too.

    Asking for directions from others is an indication of giving up.

  • If she called for directions she's scratched. No argument.

    'Get lost, get unlost'

    Sucks for her. Lesson.
