A modern front dérailleur wouldn't work, but it's an old bike with friction shifters. It might actually be a double FD.
A modern front mech can work with friction shifting. Am I missing something?
I think they were talking about modern FD wouldn't handle the difference in teeth between rings, not actually to do with friction
