Our Legends game against Inter Forever on Friday 18 May will now take
place in memory of Ray Wilkins.
Following the tragic passing of our former player, captain and
assistant coach earlier this month, the decision has been taken to
dedicate the match to Ray’s memory, with a donation to be made from
the Chelsea Foundation to Crohn’s & Colitis UK, as nominated by the
Wilkins family.
The match brings together a host of former Chelsea players, with those
who played alongside and under Ray, both at Stamford Bridge and with
his other clubs, invited to be a part of the evening.
‘Ray Wilkins had blue blood in his veins and was known and loved by
many generations of Chelsea fans having started so young as a player,
and indeed as our captain, and then returned on more than one occasion
to be an assistant manager when he helped win several important
trophies,’ said Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck.
‘Personally, I will always remember the celebrations with him when we
won competitions and his ability to explain the game was cherished by
so many of us.
‘Ray is a true Chelsea legend, and therefore our Legends Game in May
is the perfect opportunity for the club and our supporters to pay
tribute to one of football’s great guys.’
Players from Ray's days as a Chelsea coach, such as Michael Ballack,
Eidur Gudjohnsen, Michael Essien and Juliano Belletti will be taking
part.
The Legends match also brings together members of Chelsea’s triple
trophy-winning team of 1998 with a collection of Inter’s finest
players from the recent past, meaning we will see the likes of
Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Wise and player-manager Gianluca Vialli going
head to head with Javier Zanetti, Youri Djorkaeff and Francesco Toldo.
It is now two decades since the Blues lifted the League Cup, Cup
Winners’ Cup and Super Cup all in the same year. We are delighted to
be bringing that team back together to celebrate their achievements
and take on an Inter Forever side marking a 20th anniversary of their
own – they lifted the UEFA Cup in 1998 with a 3-0 win over Italian
rivals Lazio.
Tickets for the match are available from just £20 for adults and £10
for concessions, and matchday hospitality packages start from just £98
including VAT.
All proceeds from the game will go towards the Chelsea Foundation,
which boasts one of the most extensive community programmes in sport,
helping improve the lives of more than one million young people all
over the world each year.
Kick-off 7.45pm
Format 80-minute match - penalties to determine the winner if scores
are level at full-time.
