I dunno. I met guys racing it during TCR. There's a photo of me with one of the Italian guys in a cafe somewhere.
Is there more than one Northcape race?
-
• #1828
That was northcape 4000 . Florence to northcape I think. 4000km

Yeah this will be the first year for northcape-tarifa bike race. And the race route includes a ferry from helsinki to tallinn and it will be a lot longer, about 7200km, and mountainous and some gravel too, so it's not the same as the record.

ah ok thanks
looks like it'll be fun, though different weather conditions at start and finish! Hopefully good weather up north so you don't have to pack and carry too much warm stuff.
-
• #1831
Ah right, I didn't know there were multiple events.
-
• #1833
Yeah, but I didn't read anything.
Not knowing something is different to reading something right in front of you and confusing EW with NS :P -

Indeed, June can be cold in the north and rainy, and the wind is often from southwest. The roads can be interesting too, as it is a set route, so Andy had the possibility to lead us to rather small roads, that may not be that fast.

Also this, Leigh Timmis - going for the "Across Europe"

I might just nip out there and nab it in between TABR and TCR...
-
• #1837
Apparently it’s supported. I didn’t realise.
Does Guinness not differentiate?
-
• #1838
There is no distinction between supported and unsupported rides in the eyes of Guinness WRs.
-
• #1839
Be a shame for lee’s unsupported record to fall to a supported attempt. But hey ho.
-
• #1840
Agree, but I expect in practice it would be difficult for Guinness to validate that an attempt had been unsupported. We have enough debate about what is and isn't 'support' so it is probably a minefield they decided to steer clear of.
-
• #1841
That's what will happen to all the records.
-
• #1842
Yes, the Guinness records. But a record doesn't have to be Guinness-approved to be a record. Isn't it the case that Gethin didn't bother to spend money with them to get his End-to-End certified, so they still recognise Wilko's record? But obviously nobody else does.
In the internet era there is less need for a central accrediting body like Guinness. -
• #1843
Yes, I do agree here completely. It would be impossible to validate an unsupported attempt as true.

in other news, Ian To is going, Saturday.

I don't know this guy, where is he from?
That's the EW record, Sean's one. -
• #1847
No, you don't have to spend money with them and Gethin's Record is in Guinness.
Although technically many of the RRA ratified records are likely in breach of Guinness rules for various reasons like bike swaps, etc.
In Woodburn's eyes he still had the record anyway since the time gap was too small and there was a new bridge so it could be argued that Wilko's was actually slower than Woodburn's.. but that's another matter.

What's the weather doing? Going when the weather isn't great is a bad idea.

https://www.leightimmis.com/about-leigh-timmis/
Sean knew of his attempt as he went when he did to be able to do it unsupported before a supported attempt put it out of reach.
did that happen last year? I don't think so. It's northcape 4000 that's been running a few years.
Lee wasn't the fastest out there, but he wasn't a slouch. He was rock solid tough. So his 21.5 isn't exactly soft.
Starts 20th June, so if Will is going late July, we'll have an idea whats possible as a few fast names on the list.
