LOOK - Look at them!

  • So, having just had a bike fit, I now know that I have been riding bikes that are all too big for me. I will be changing up my stable as and when I can replace with size S:

    • Size 53 Look KG 281 (Kelme version),
    • Size 53 Look KG 381 Jalabert edition

Looking for KG 381, 585 or 595 frames in 51/52

  • @punkture In terms of too big, were you still comfortable on the M's? What actual size is your KG381, they were sold with 1cm increments, or at least the couple I had were? And er, how tall are you?

  • Ive ridden them for years and was fine with them but ive got knee issues and my shoulder tenses alot on rides, both of which begin to hurt more as I get older so I got the bike fit and, hey presto! everything makes sense now.

my 281 has a 55 top tube and I would imagine the 381 is very similar though will measure it in a bit (cant find the geo chart). I basically need a 52.5/52 frame. I'm 5'7/5'8

  • @punkture on my frames, the CM size was on the bottom of the downtube top lug, approximately where the arrow is in this photo. But, it was really hard to see under the paint. You'll need to flip the frame and probably take the wheel out.

Alas, I had to part with mine as they were just too aggressive. The frame in the photo is a 52cm and I'm 5'8". I've got a 30" inside leg measurement and the saddle / bar drop was a lot for more than an hour in the saddle.

  • Mine are both 53s so just a touch too big as the top tubes are 55 and I need 52.5. Have you sold yours (though I think it may still be too big)?

  • @punkture With the KG381 series, even for the 49cm they have a 53.9cm top tube. You'll also go down a further 3cm on the head tube length, which will make for quite an aggressive ride. This is a [bad]photo of my GF on the 52cm I had (she had a 49cm, we had matching bikes :-) ) but you can see the drop.

For her bike, you can see how short the head tube is on the photo below. I think if you've got stiff shoulders, you might need something with a bit more stack, as when I tried her bike, the seatpost was at the maximum.

  • @Muppetteer See the attached measurements from my fit. A lower saddle, shorter stem and 51ish frame might work on the 381? Though I've been looking at the 585 and 595 which seems to suit better

  • @punkture Alas, I'm no expert on bike fitting and can really on go from my own experiences. It might be worth asking in Bike fit / correct riding position. However, I'm 5'8" and did ride the 49cm Look. It was quite lo-pro for me.

  • Wow, I'm shorter than 5'7'' and my 565 (same geo as a 585) in 51cm is running a 110mm stem and has a reach several centimetres longer than that set up!

It's still actually shorter and higher than I used to run my Giant TCRs, and I had a 49cm Look as well in the same geo but it was definitely too small.

Based on those reach figures you're going to struggle to get the 381 to fit properly. The shorter seat and head tube is going to make the saddle to bar drop pretty big and you'll need a tiny stem.

Incidentally I think the 381 in 52 above would fit me well - slightly too long but I've got short legs for my height so the seat/bar drop wouldn't be an issue. That gives you an idea of how different our respective set ups are even though you're taller and are after the same size bike as I ride.

  • So I just measured myself and I'm actually 5'6. Bugger. deffo thought I was taller

  • I just got a 586 from ebay, not too sure about the state of the dropouts though.

There's a crack on the screw for the hanger, and on top there's a crack in the paint (which looks like it's touch up paint already)

    Is it a bit risky?

  • If the only crack was the one shown in the first one, I'd DIY mend that some good glue and careful tightening of the bolt in the future. But the second photo looks a bit dangerous. I see two shades of white there which implies a cover up attempt. But the crack returning post cover up implies real crack.

I would't ride that, and I'm pretty gung ho.

  • Money back IMO

  • thanks, wasn't what I wanted to hear but sounds like good advice

  • If that zig-zag crack goes straight through it's just the dropout shroud. Try pushing the seat stay in and pulling the chainstay out and see if the crack opens up. Even if it is a crack in the vital structure, it's probably repairable but at a cost which is likely to render the value of the unrepaired frame close to zero, so you'll be wanting a refund.

  • Not mine, but this is for sale on facebook if anyone is looking for a small 585 without the wheels.

  • Maybe it's just me, but I've always thought the 585 and the 595 look a bit crap and generic in their black paint schemes.

@pastry_bot Hold out for a nice in your face zebra IMO

  • Thanks for the advice, I tried the push pull but the crack didn't open or move. I contacted londoncarbonrepairs to see if it was possible to fix but didn't get a reply so it's back in the box ready for a return. Shame because I really liked it.

  • Is anyone looking for a LOOK A Stem? Matt Black 120mm 5deg.
I'm selling it for a family friend who has got a shorter one.

Thought I would try here first before I stick it on ebay.

  • I will shortly have a set of Look carbon Power cranks for sale
Like the below but just grabbed the picture from google. Used condition and no rings unfortunately.
