I did mention it but I don't know if there's much they can do unless they go to court and get to see his phone usage records - it wasn't caught on the video because of the glare from the windscreen.
They are keeping me in the loop - needed to slightly edit the video because of the 2 mins before and after rule - 2 mins after showed some identifiable stuff to me and they were really helpful with telling me what to do -

Quite an amazing one last night. Riding home, I was turning right from Roman Road into Cambridge Heath Road. I was in no particular hurry and thought 'let's do a nice, proper wide turn' (you can cut right fairly diagonally at this junction and it's a split phase between Bethnal Green Road and Roman Road). Just then a seemingly drunk moped rider (judging by the inebriated shouting) with a pillion passenger ran the red traffic light on Bethnal Green Road. Had I turned less wide they might well have hit me. As it was, there was still plenty of space between me and them. They then performed a full circle inside the junction (as drivers were still coming out of Roman Road, both to go straight and turn) and raced back along Bethnal Green Road.

Probably not drunk (or could be drunk, who knows), likely to be kids on a nicked scooter - it's something that's become really common around East London recently, the side streets between Liverpool Street and Dalston are especially bad with all the little pr*cks who drive on pavements and grab people's phones.

Yes, I have no idea whether they were drunk, they just sounded that way, but perhaps it was just endorphins/laughing gas/something I don't know about yet.

Had a kinda crazy experience a few weeks back in Hampstead (of all places). Was riding up towards the tube station up haverstock hill (?) and a white van pulled out after i went past at a T junction. The white van then pulled up aside me and the passenger started hurling abuse, full on spit flying unhappy bloke abuse. I was confused and basically just took it, wondering what i could've done having only been near him for about 10 feet. After a bit of shouting they drove up the road and I lost sight of them.
I was a bit confused, but otherwise fine. I continued up the road and approached the light, where there was a long line of traffic. I spotted the white van about 5 cars ahead of me, as i got closer i realised the passenger was staring at me in the wing mirror with his door slightly open. I assume the aim was to door me as i went by. When i realised this i just did an awkward bike waddle across the stationary traffic and into the other lane and went back the way i came. As i did this, the guy got out of his car and started to walk/run towards me with an unhappy look and clenched fists. Obviously i bolted pretty quick when i saw that.
i have had my fair share of road rage and whatnot, but this guy seemed to just not like the way i looked or something. not only that but was unhappy enough for whatever reason that he was willing to haul his gut out of his van to pick a fight with me...wtf... didnt even have my D-lock -

More likely to be something about the way he felt about himself rather than anything about you. Fuckwits be fuckwits, and there's nothing you can do about it other than avoid them.

• #8158
yeah for sure, gotta avoid them...or maybe develop a martial art..."D-lock Fu"?

A case of mistaken identity?

yeah i guess so, I mean, must've been right? Cant imagine why else unless he was just off his rocker.

Just got an email saying a notice of intended prosecution has been sent regarding a report i made of a guy driving on his phone. He buzzed me as he passed and gave a snarky comment when I said I'd report him. Hope he gets his comeuppance.
Actually, what is the next step, will I be notified of court proceedings - if there are any?

October last year I reported a dangerous overtake followed by RLJ by a driver. Police asked me to remove footage as they were intending to prosecute.
I followed up on it today and got the following response:
Hi James,
The nominated driver has attended and completed a driving course, therefore this case is now closed.
Regards
Julie

I keep meaning to ask roadsafe to clarify this, but it's my assumption that the initial NIP is simply a means of getting the driver to identify themselves - or whoever else may have been driving.
I've had exactly the same response from relatively innocuous reports so I'm certain it's no guarantee they're being prosecuted.

the initial NIP is simply a means of getting the driver to identify themselves - or whoever else may have been driving.
That was explicitly stated in the email I received;
We have now sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution to the registered keeper for them to furnish the drivers details at the time of the alleged offence

As my other half has been caught speeding recently, i've seen one of these in the flesh. It gets you to establish who was driving, then, depending on how many points you're on / driving record history, they send you the options. If you've previously been fairly good, you get the option of fine and points, or driver awareness course that may have a fee but waive the points.
If you're full of points already, and have already attended the course you're more likely in bigger trouble.
I think.

General question - do local police forces / roadsafe have any obligation to keep you informed, or is it entirely at their discretion?
-
• #8168
The latter. Good practice is the former, but there's no legal obligation on them to do so AFAIK.

Out on a training ride in the run up to my Scotland trip next month, and while riding along a single track road with passing places that I use a lot out on the Somerset levels I saw a flatbed transit towing a horse box coming towards me. I was nearest to a passing place so I pulled over and waited for the flatbed to pass. I spotted that there were three guys in the cab and at the very last moment instead of the 'thank you' wave that I vainly hoped to receive I saw the drivers arm coming out of the window. My reactions were fast enough that I looked away just in time to get the contents of the drivers water bottle over the right side of my head and face.
I have no idea what kind of person would think to do this, obviously not a nice one, but I guarantee that if I drove to the nearest 'travellers' site, which is just a couple of miles from where this happened I would find the flatbed, the horse box it was towing and the nasty bastard who threw the water.
Needless to say I have not yet refitted the camera bracket to my summer bike, not that it would do much good as I am pretty sure the Police would find the flatbed was running on false number plates, plus I suspect the camp is a no go area for Plod anyway. Still, it would have been nice to be able to do something.

Casual racism though.

Traveler, not traveler, always driven by cunts.

I've only ever cycled through there during the Christmas / New Year period, but I have never enjoyed it or felt safe

Had a bit of a shocker this afternoon.
I was out on an solo Audax today, near Battle late afternoon I can across a smashed up BMW and an old bloke staggering about in the road, obviously I stopped as I was concerned about his wellbeing, however when I got close I realised he was hammered on booze.
I asked what happened he just wanted me to go away, I decided to call the police when he realised what I was doing he got really aggressive and tried to grab my phone I was already speaking to an operator so I pushed him away and told him to back up. He kept coming at me so I walked up the road a bit and stayed on the phone, police were on their way and asked me to wait.
In the meantime someone drove up and picked him up and went back in the opposite direction the car was facing, someone else drove past looked at the car eyeballed me and drove off, he then came back two minutes later checked out the car so I flagged him down, turns out he was looking for the fella as he came out of a pub jumped in his car drove straight out the carpark smashed into a car driving past and drove off. Which is most surprising as the wheel was totalled and hanging off and it looked like the axle had snapped!
Police turned up impounded the car and went looking for him, I'm expecting a call tomorrow.
It was so shocking I mean the guy was so drunk he could have killed someone, fuck him so fucking much.
Going up the hill between tooting broadway and tooting bec the vehicles all seem to time their overtakes to coincide with the pedestrian crossings where the centre island narrows their lane.
