Speaking of this, if I want something a little more capable than my humble mju-ii, what should I be looking for? Any old eos with a decent lense?

Buy one of amey's Leicas!

Seriously though it of course depends what you want to do and what kind of camera you want to use, whether you want interchangable lenses or not, autofocus or not, manual modes or not..
..short: what kind of "capabilities" you're after. -
• #16382
Yeah good point. I guess I do very much like the simplicity of a Mju. Autofocus is nice but manual would be cool too. There've been times where I couldn't get the shot I wanted because of autofocus. Would be nice to have interchangeable lenses too. I guess that fits the description of an SLR.

Yea, pretty much.. or one of the mirror-less system cameras as well.
If you want simplicity but more options (and can do with manual focusing only) I'd get a manual SLR.
If you want autofocus capability as well I'd go for a modern SLR.Everybody will suggest one brand or the other.
If you go for an autofocus one I'd say buy a Canon, as both lenses and bodies are good and cheap.
If you go for manual focus I'd say go to a second hand store and hold them in your hand. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus etc.. they all made great stuff back in the day, so you can't go wrong basically, just choose one that feels nice. The only thing I personally would do differently if I were to start over with cameras now is getting a 35 instead of a 50mm as a first lens (you will basically feel right at home, coming from the Mju).

First time using Portra 800 - I think i'd expected slightly more muted tones... back to Ektar for the next roll, especially as Warsaw seems to have gone straight from winter to summer about a month ago...

Get a Minolta CLE

Thank you for the wise words. I suspect I'll buy an EOS 300 or something cheap like that. I may hate carrying it around so don't want to spend too much money. Great shout on the lens size, too :-)

I work for a charity. No ridiculous day rates over here pal.

• #16388
Swap out the focusing screen on the 100 for a split prism, fit an ef-fd adaptor and you have a ghetto-t90
-
• #16389
CLE isnt that pricey .. its a cheaper Leica CL, it will do everything you want.
I have a Rollei XF35 that might fit the bill, has a 40mm f/2.8 Zeiss Sonnar, will be cheap, £70?

I suspect I'll buy an EOS 300 or something
Look for a 300V or 300X model, they have a steel mount and a little higher shutter speed.
They can be had for peanuts on eBay..Also if you want to keep it small and light you might check out this lens (Canon EF 40mm STM)
..it doesn't look like it but that's a really great little lens that can be had for under £100 used.Shot this on a friends' Canon for a while and loved it.
Image quality is very good, and it's surprising how much easier the camera is to stow away in a rather full bag with a lens that isn't protruding but rather flush with the front of the camera body. -

I've just been collecting a bunch of EF lenses so this seems a bit silly, though I understand FD is even cheaper...
-
• #16392
Stick with EOS/EF. FD is great but... really it's not.
((I'm going to grab out my F1N/New-F1/whatever-it-is now and pretend I don't hate it))

I like these, especially the one with the kid.

Both Portra and Ektar are rather saturated I'd have thought?
The old Portra NC was "muted" I'd say but the new one is rather bold to my eyes. -

I have this lens, I use it on a film Eos, but I use it all the time on a digital Eos too.
As r&s said the film body was about a fiver and the lens was £90 in mint condition.
If you put the lens on a 300 you'd have something pretty compact, light and easy

Ha, nice!
I never used it on film though. Care to share a few pictures shot with that setup?
-
• #16397
That looks perfect and exactly what I'm after. Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.
-
• #16398
Damn, now I gotta fight the rest of you to get a 40mm on ebay.
-
• #16399
Weren't you just falling in love with your old (new) F1 again?
-
• #16400
will do, as soon as I get round to developing/scanning some of the backlog!!
For sure.
I recently bought an EOS with the old 35-70 or something for £20 locally, cos I sold all my EF lenses. I wanted at least one autofocus on the 1DmkII for a ‘job’ - it is so much cheaper buying lenses attached to bodies. Also much easier than focusing my old Russian m42 glass. I know what looks nicer though...
