You just have to keep the vertical growth down, generally people don't cut enough off for the reason who've mentioned, I try keeping the vertical growth down to 1 or 2 buds , I'm sure there'll be someone on site that's eager to help you, also you can try different methods on different layers and see which works best

I'm sure pruning is easy I guess I'm just scared. Probably a common issue.
