Stribe hardtail – a prototype

  • It's alive! All this wait made me almost forget that the hole purpose of this is to ride and have fun... and it turns out that this is a fucking fun bike. Spent the evening with a friend that rides a full suspension 29" at the local trails, and this thing doesn't mind keeping up. It's fast! As expected you have to work a bit on the flats and steady climbs (our trails are anything but smooth), but it eats everything on the descents. I was blown away by how good the combination of the fork, geometry and big tires worked. Was going fast downhill over rocky drops, and the rear end was just laughing at anything I dared throw at it. Of course my background is cross, so I'm used to picking lines and landings wisely, but this thing felt closer to a full suspension bike going downhill.

I'll snap some proper photos later, but in the meantime these phone ones will have to do.

  • Congrats! Looks great!

    *awaits pre-order

  • Super exciting and inspiring. Well done!

  • Love it. Looks so much fun

  • So good. Looks like a good successor for my VanNicholas.

  • I was blown away by how good the combination of the fork, geometry and big tires worked.

Modern MTB stuff is amazing isn't it?

Coming from 'cross my MTB bros were always amused by my curious desire to pick a line when shit got rough... but then I was using a Ti hardtail too.

  • 2018 is all about the Deathgrip and monstertruck style of riding for sure :)

  • This is seriously good. Gumwall and that deep green go so well together. You must be chuffed!

  • Cheers guys! Still very happy after the second ride.

@Aroogah @Tijmen: Yea. Doing some revisions to have the second proto round ordered soon. When that's checked off we should be ready to take a few orders.

  • Still haven't gotten around to take proper photo's, but here are some more from the phone after yesterdays ride. I'm really started to get it dialled in, and it gets more and more fun for every ride. New, shorter Kalloy Uno stem is on, and this length works much better, so should probably paint it and cut the steerer. Also setting it up tubeless now, only had time to do the front before the ride last night, but wow, that's improving the bike a lot.

So all in all this is going well. I'm ordering another couple of frames for some friends to build up and test with all the revisions I'm doing after this proto. Making it a bit longer and lower and fine-tuning geo and features here and there.

  • what a super level build you got there!! Well well done!!

  • Nice! Longer and lower will enable an even shorter stem I guess?

  • Yes, that will be the biggest change, I'm thinking setting it up for a +-50mm stem should be ideal.

  • This is great! Any sense of when you might start taking orders for the first batch?

  • I'd kinda like to have one. Options for singlespeed would be nice

  • Hopefully we can start taking some early adopter/LFGSS orders after summer.

Not going to be any sliding features for this model – at least not for now. Sorry @Heldring.

  • I might be in for the pre-prod run if you can do:

    • 3-bolt bottle cage mount under DT
    • clearance for big 29x2.4" tyres + mud
    • nice big triangle for frame bag
    • external cable routing
    • HT2 or similarly simple BB
  • Not doing custom options, but a few of these should be ticked. I’ll of course post full feature list when we are ready.

  • Whats the thinking here? Will you be able to offer these frames cheaper than if somebody just went direct to waltly with the same geo?

  • Not likely, but it should be very competetive with other brands if we get that far. Making a frame is more than sending in a geo and getting a perfect one back. I think many on here are more than capable of doing it themselves, so if willing to put in the hours with specs and communication plus the risk that things doesn’t work as planned on the first try - go for it. I enjoy it, but it’s not for everyone. We’re not doing this to quit our dayjobs or get rich, we’re doing it because we think it’s fun. If a few friends or someone on here or Instagram wants one – cool!

  • Gotcha. Not having a dig, just curious.
The bike looks fucking sick though so seeing the results, I’m sure you’ll get a few people wanting one. Best of luck with it, I’d love to start a brand and do similar

  • You only ride road bikes?

  • Nice things like this tempt me. It doesn't look agricultural.
