Picked up a refurbished Nexus 5X to replace the one that's just died (and that Lg are refusing to repair under warranty)
Sending it back 2 hours after receiving it, as it;s stuck in an overheating bootloop.
*sigh*
What's a cheap & cheerful android phone that I can pick up & use as a phone, and not worry about the other bits?

I just bought a Xiaomi Mi A1 for £140ish shipped from "Germany". But the bastard still hasn't even been shipped after 5 business days.
When it arrives I can tell you if it's any good but reviews are pretty raving

Nope, I'll give it a try!

Alcatel Pixi I assume they're still on 4.0 like mine, I have it as a phone I can put in jersey pocket and not worry too much if I forget to take it out before doing laundry. Cheaper than a candy bar :)

Moto G
Prefer the 3rd gen vs the 4th gen, for solid feeling and VFM. But the 4g has a much bigger screen.

No. I have the same thing for anticoag meds (that I've stopped taking) and it's never failed.
cough user error cough
Could be a permission setting or something else on the phone breaking your notifications?

Had it since near launch, great phone for the price point. Quick, battery last a day and half on heavy usage, would recommend putting the GCAM mod on to it as the camera software it comes with is rubbish and makes photos look horrid.

Any midrange (£200-300) phones that meet the following criteria I should be aware of?
At least 32GB storage
waterproof or at least water resistant
3.5mm audio
USB-C/fast charging
half decent cameraI'm holding out for the Moto G6 which seems to mostly fit the bill (other than the waterproofing)

I thought I must have accidentally opened the diary event and somehow fumble-changed it so it no longer had a notification attached the first time it happened, but then it worked fine the next day. It didn't work yesterday and I looked at the event and it still said it was supposed to send me a notification. I haven't changed the permission settings on the app and it still works I'd say the majority of the time; it's very weird.
My other guess when I first noticed it was that Doze was being too aggressive and causing it somehow but usually that manifests itself to me as notifications coming in much later than they were supposed to arrive once I pick the phone up and move around, not them just straight up not showing up. -

New Nokia 6, £229? Not sure about the waterproofing on that though. Camera is average apparently, i.e. decent in good light, suffers in the dark. Android One update schedule though so probably better support than the G6 if that appeals to you.

Yeah, power saving setting is a good shout. I know my newer phone(s) are more likely to sleep deeper so it could be possible the Calendar app is not in the 'override sleep settings' group or similar.

I'm running the Android P Beta on my Pixel XL.
It's great. Very responsive and some nice new UI features. I'm looking forward to the AI learning I of my actions and screen brightness.

Does android pay work with the beta? And banking apps?

I got the Nokia 6.1 a few days ago. After not using Android since the Galaxy S2, I'm really enjoying it. I am already heavily invested in Google services so thought I'd bite the bullet and ditch iPhone. The right move so far. Camera is average but I have a camera for taking photos. In the light the camera is fine. Hardware is good. Bargain for £229.

got the Nokia 6.1
I don't know why they didn't actually call it that

My box says Nokia 6.1 :-) Everywhere else says Nokia 6 (2018)

Xiaomi Mi A1 arrived, it's pretty unbelievable how good it is for £140. Granted I'm not a power user* but after messing about with it for an hour or so it seems to be nearly as good as the Nexus 6P it replaced, only (over) half the price. Battery seems okay but I haven't had it for a full day yet so we'll see how it goes tomorrow. Camera is the other thing I haven't properly tried yet but I think I'll do the GCAM thing first as suggested by @CanonAxe
* it's good enough to run a selection of Chrome, camera, music, maps, messages, etc. all at the same time

It does seem to be official in at least some markets, I guess they received about 300 million tweets telling them to get with the program

Glad your enjoying it, love mine and for that price.
This is the guide I used for the GCAM, no need to root and once installed you still get the OTA updates

No waterproofing. Had mine near the shower a few times and it's been fine despite water droplets. Charges fast, battery has been really good so far. Very impressed. At 60% where my iPhone would be at 30% despite being way more active in the background. Headphone jack (main reason I got this phone!) Screen is very good outside too. To be honest my only minor gripe is lack of stabilisation when filming but I don't do that very much either.

Banking apps fine. Not used Pay yet but I would have no reason to doubt that it would be fine.

I have a 5x and this morning my phone tells me that I cant pay in ships on this phone as it rooted or altered in someway. I'm on the beta program and have Android 8.1.0 and is update as 5 November 2017. I've checked for updates and it says its fine. Although I know they have stopped updating them anyway. What can I do to sort this out? Can i go back to normal android instead of Beta test if I'm still even on it?
Have you tried a factory reset and reinstall?
