They were joking... Apparently they’ve seen people at races get off the bus with jacket and helmet to carry round and mingle.
I had my helmet upside down for a few days at work and the inside of the visor got a horrible coating of dust that I only noticed once I rode towards the setting sun. Lesson learned!

You work with utter twonks. Have seen people turn up at rykas in box hill in cars and then get out put on a helmet and jacket on to mingle with the bikers. Why?
Why would you carry around a helmet when you don't have to? Especially as it can get knocked marked or dirty. I am OCD ish about my helmet. I don't put the helmet on the floor or hang of off a handlebar, or stick my dirty gloves inside.
Then the queue at hasting are long and people are annoying.
