What I was trying to get at was, that some cars have sound deadening felt under the carpets and if the water has been sitting there for a while it can start to rot and smell.

I think it's only surface moisture but until I have a closer look that's just a guess. There's no evidence of 'a lot' of water though but I guess you never know.
