Yeah, that's why I suggested checking the shifter end, where you can't normally see within the actual shifter. I've broken cables at that end and the cable is still gripped so it feels complete but the snapped bit is in the rotating shifter body so it doesn't move properly, in my case only did like half the number of clicks before it stopped/jammed. Finger's crossed. Cables are cheaper than shifters.
One of the seasoned mechanics at work said it’s likely the cable/cable end has hopped out of its location and jammed in the shifter - this was based on me describing the issue so I’m hoping I’ll be able to sort it when I get home.
