Have some Avanti (which I assume are 8sp) knocking around if parts, if that's what you need, but not sure if it's fully-functional. Shout if helpful.

Have some campy Mirage but think their 9 speed

Yes, Avanti was only available in 8 speed.

As you can see from the link you posted, 8 speed parts are no longer available and any shifters are getting on for twenty years old now.
If you can pick up a pair of shifters cheap enough, then that will buy you some time, but the spring mount rings are on borrowed time and once they go, the shifter is toast.
If I was in your position, I'd see this incident as being Fate's way of telling you to move on to at least 9 speed, although 10 is probably better value for money.

ah yeah, thanks for the good thoughts. there was blood and that's some of it but just a nasty road rash, nothing serious.

Yikes, glad to hear.

thanks for the advice, I hadn't even considered that. according to sheldon b it would mean moving everything onto a new rear hub as a 9/10 cassettes won't fit well on an 8. Might try the Avanti and start saving for a full switch down the road.

Umm, am running Mirage 8's brifters (which are cheapish at about £25 a pair) with 10spd Chorus mechs, chainset and 10-block (albeit on a Mirage 10spd hub.) Shifting's a bit sketchy sometimes but it works :/ mostly and they seem pretty robust / longlife-y. I think there are some f/s right now on cough retrobike cough
Actually, not sure any of this is helpful. Ignorance and necessary penny pinching will probably mean I'll die. -

Best buy a new bike then...

Sure, if you can find some that are known to have had an easy life and/or are cheap enough to be considered disposable that's fine.
But time is running out for 8 speed.
There was some chat about 3D printing spring mount rings a while back, but I don't think anything came of it.
I crashed and smashed the right brake lever of an 8-speed Chorus group. Anything that could be transplanted would be great.
Had a look at Campagnolo Service Centre but they're closed for holidays, apparently.
