  • There seems to be an ibis about 7 miles away which looks good.

  • Tho is the higher training load all there is, or can I for example train my metabolism to be more efficient for ultras by doing lots of really long rides, and would that have any meaningful effect in performance. Does it matter how you make that load high.

Indeed training in a way you enjoy is most important. As it is in the way you race too.

  • So, looking at WKO, 2016 I was doing some long rides (and still PBing short TTs). So this year will likely be the year with the least amount of riding pre-ultras.

  • Some gear chat plz guize!
For the rebirth of the Bowman, I've taken receipt of an 11-32 5800 cassette today. Proper mountain bike spec.
Now I can generally climb ok but I'd imagine the cumulative fatigue of all the long days and climbing is gonna fuck me royally.
Also considering taking the rotors off my LOOK for the new build and going praxis works 48/32 at the front too. Interested to hear the experience of what you've ridden in the past and what you're planning on riding this year.

  • Gearing is personal. I like low gears, and I agree that the cumulative fatigue means you need lower than normal. I used a compact with an 11-40 cassette.
I used 34x4o a lot, 50x11 a bit but not so much. So I would gear lower rather than higher. For this year I may even put a smaller chainset on

  • 58 with 11-23t

Anything else is for weaklings like hippy.

  • 46/34 12-32

  • I've done TABR, TCRx2 on Compact cranks w/ 11-28->32T

    Regards,

    hippy,
    never knowingly under 90kg

  • I would gear lower rather than higher

    This.

I'm testing a long cage RD with a 36T at the moment.

  • 23T?! Pffft blouse! I took off every cog except the 11T, 12T and 13T and then realised I was superstitous so I replaced the 13T with another 11T just to remind me to fucking pedal harder!

    58x11-12-11 ftw

  • Lol

  • That’s a triple front right right? 11-12-11 with 58 on the back.

Sounds about right gearing for the power you make.

  • Which RD are you using?
I'm hoping to get a 105 RD long cage and 11-34 cassette working together but interested in hearing how you're managing this feat.

  • praxis works 48/32

Happy with mine, not the prettiest but shifts well. Driving a sram 11-36t.

  • A Road Link is what you need if you want to go big. Probably not necessary for a 36 though.

  • My jockey wheels are bigger than your chainring.

I don't make power, I steal it from the Earth as I rotate it underneath me.

  • Yeah, GS cage works with 36T so 34T will be fine.

  • I have one. Unused thus far as the Ultegra Di2 GS cage copes fine with 36T.

  • A 36? Absolute madness.
This is good news though, can keep an all silver groupset, even if the rest of the bike is a monstrosity

  • What kind of tapering would you do for this event?

    *Assumes some training is undertaken

  • In 2016 I went sailing in Greece for 2 weeks, then back for only moderate rides the last couple of weeks.
Greece was probably a bit more of a taper than ideal, and with more beer than a coach would recommend, but it meant that after 2 weeks with no cycling I was keen to ride again when I got home.

  • I read this somewhere recently, ignore the science and make sure you are keen to get back on the bike after a bit of rest

  • Tapeworming? They'd be too repulsed to touch my body.

  • Ha. I do 2 of my biggest weeks in those weeks.

For most people I’d say 1 easy ish week before is more than enough.
