I don't think that there is even a remote chance of NK giving up it's nuclear weapons - that's what brought Trump to their table. They'll agree to a test ban, to halting their research program (which amounts to Russia stopping sending them missile bodies and engines), but actually get rid of the nukes themselves? Never going to happen. They've got political leverage now, that they can use to bargain from a position of strength.

I agree with that @dammit, bit I also feel I need to grudgingly give him some respect for being instrumental in getting this far.

People often compare Trump to Hitler but in some ways the demagogue he most resembles is Chavez. Not politically, but in terms of method. Trump's use of social media and crap TV is similar to Chavez's "Hello Mr. President" tv show.

I think Trump's real impact on the Korean peace process is that Kim Jong Un realised he was no longer the craziest fucker in the room and would be better off making Trump look even more unhinged by appearing sweet and reasonable. Which he's achieved. I'd now rather do business with North Korea than America now anyway....

Trump was like any other deranged fucker who phones in to talk radio. I used to listen to such shows to hear and laugh at the crazy people. He sounded utterly deluded.

NK escalated the tension with their accelerated test program, launching missiles over Japan, claiming to have tested advanced nuclear bomb types, ability to reach US territories etc. Trump merely responded with typical bombast. I have no idea what triggered the recent conciliatory meeting with the South but I doubt it was threats of sanctions or "fire and fury" from the US. Maybe I'm forgetting something?

So I reckon it's his attempt to save face and say they meant to decommission it rather than them not being able to fire any more rockets.

Its probably, as with lots of things, a combination of effects.

The nuclear mountain collapsing won't have helped, and as it's quite close to China, I imagine they are loosing patience fast. Kim had a meeting with China earlier this month. I imagine this was high on the list of the agenda rather than AOB.

Also, it sounds like they are ramping up the enforcement of sanctions. They identified and then impounded boats involved in illegal mid sea boat transfers of petroleum products not long ago. If they're really starting to get a hold on this, the pressure will only be mounting inside NK.

Plus, trump is so unhinged perhaps Kim just realised that messing with this guy could go all types of wrong. It is mad that I think the mental madman from Korea is less nuts than the president of the United states, but that's where we're at tight now.

It seems to me that China is simply pursuing the goal of getting the US (and its nukes) out of South Korea.

Didn't South Korea just topple their right wing, US supporting president and elect a lefty, 'make peace with the North' president? Unlike his predecessor for the last 6 years, he campaigned and had a stated goal of improving relations with the north.

He definitely campaigned on a promise of peace and improving relations with the North, which was a marked change to his predecessor. Surely he should be getting a bit of credit for this?
