  • Can’t have been good, he’d have mentioned it already if it was!

  • Mine times on that circuit are like 26s and shit so it's never going to be super fast.

  • I did about 25:35 so it was actually a decent ride.
I thought it was much worse because the power numbers were pathetic. But power must have been ok given my time. I was a few seconds faster than Dave Newman and only a couple of seconds slower than jasmijn and she's generally faster than me nowadays. And I was about a minute faster than when I last rode one exactly two years ago.
So it was a preparation failure.

  • So it was a somewhat successful return. Nyer @andyp

You just need to remember the details. It all came back second race for me. Now I just need to combine warmup with power with not getting lost. When's your next one?

  • I wasn’t having a dig, more that if someone does a good time, they’ll tell you. Usually more than once.

  • Yeah, times at Hillingdon are never going to be great though.

I was disgusted with my time in Wales... yet it was the third fastest I've ever done. Even the ridiculously shit race at Etwall the other week was probably still in my top-10. None of it matters if all you want is a sub-50 though.

  • I wasn’t having a dig, more that if someone does a good time, they’ll tell you. Usually more than once.

No problem - I actually didn't even bother to look at my time at the end as I was so pissed off about the low power numbers! The Hillingdon TTs are just training rides for me so I don't get too attached to the time. Also the conditions vary a lot, so I generally focus on power as that is what I can control, and how I do relative to a few people who are usually a similar speed to me, and I usually know that based on whether they pass me or I pass them so don't need to know the times.

  • It all came back second race for me.
Yes, that's my thinking - I had to do one to realise what I had to remember for the next one.

I'm in the 25 at Bentley tomorrow but not sure I'll ride (baby not well).

If not, the next one will be the 50 at Bentley next weekend. I expect they must have resurfaced the A31 while I have been away...

  • They were doing works on the A31 when i drove along it on Monday night, but on the eastbound stretch after the Hen and Chicken. Chawton stretch still terrible, hit a pothole that worried me in the car.

  • Remember though TTs are against the clock, not the powermeter.

All my PBs are off less power than I used to make.

On the other hand I'm still getting a handle on pacing this year. All of the place compared to the old days when I could nail it.

  • Yeah... resurfaced it with rubble and burned out cars. #scenefrommadmax

(I've not been there, don't stress)

  • Remember though TTs are against the clock, not the powermeter.

That's true. And my PB at Hillingdon is off modest power on a fast night. But I'm not training to get a PB at Hillingdon, but to get in shape for TCR which I'll do on a different bike in different kit, etc.

One thing I was really pleased with was when I looked at my lap splits for Weds evening. First 10 laps were all within 3 seconds, or 2% (Started GPS late so missed the slower 15 seconds at the start). Then I emptied the tanks on the last lap and it was a bit faster.

  • If you're not concerned with time and it's TCR training then wouldn't it be prudent to race on the TCR bike?

Jealous. I've started really hard in both 25s then backed off but not enough, then something's gone wrong and I'm doing 600W while looking at the meter thinking "don't do it dickhead" but being too grumpy to back off, then I'm doing 200W thinking "5 hours in the car for this you idiot" and then it's ok but not great.

  • If you're not concerned with time and it's TCR training then wouldn't it be prudent to race on the TCR bike?

Yeah, I thought about doing that. It's caked in mud so I'd have to clean it prematurely though.
My secondary objective for this year was/ is to have a go at getting a decent 100 time, which means getting back on the TT bike.
Also I felt a bit nostalgic when I saw people going under the hour and catching myself thinking 'i used to be able to do that'
I think if I did a TT and had a really crap time I'd hate it. I'd use the TCR bike for a club event on amersham road where I'd ridden out but it seems a bit disrespectful to do it in an open.

Sorry what were you asking again? ;)

  • I'd have to clean it prematurely

Definitely don't do that. hisses at pressure washer

Going under the hour seems relatively easy now, going under 50min is causing me some issues. I just don't have the time to aero test, I've run out of ideas for things to optimise and I've not made any power gains for the last 5 years so I doubt I will now.

If it was an oversubscribed open and you were pissing about, people might take issue, but then there's people who enter and don't turn up because the wind isn't right direction so you'd hardly be setting a terrible precedent. If I want to set a PB on my MTB and I've paid the entry so be it, I reckon.

  • Oh, I thought you'd gone faster than that.

    unfollows

  • Do what you want. I’d race an open on whatever bike. You paid your entry fee.

100s are great training for ultra. And training for a 100 is great training too. Enter one!

  • 46:56

Christ. It takes me about that long to get my Velotoze on.

  • I like 100s too. They're typically longer than the drive to the event and yet leave you time for the pub afterwards :). Maybe I should throw one in this year just for the LOLs.

  • Speaking of that, my overshoes are starting to get a bit tatty.

Maybe I should try the Vol-au-vents...

  • What shoes do you use?

  • Shimano R320s

Normally I would race with my custom covers but I was probably trying to delay my feet/legs going numb.

  • The current trip suit doesn't seem to have grooves on the arms but has them all over the back. Fucksake guys just make me FASTER!

Actually on one of the pics it looks like the arm grooves are there but horizontal not vertical.

"Testing has shown a 3W improvement over the best previous version."

    I need about 30W...

  • 100s are my favourite. I’m racing on the E2. My lts gets me a ride on there.
Want to go sub 3:30. They’re such a good event. And long enough for me to get into a rhythm and turn up the hurt.
