Brass I got from a local building centre (I'm in Canada) and it's pretty easy to work with. My stand looks really cool (I think) but I'm pretty sure it makes whatever burner I'm using less efficient - I bet your setup outperforms it.

This is clever, I'm going to try it. My problem with them is never being able to cram one can into the other though (even if I do the stretching thing with a full can)

It can be a faff but worth persevering. Theres a few instructions on youtube, this vid is pretty much same method I used. https://youtu.be/lHTy_n5SeNw

If I can get some brass locally I'll have a go at similar then compare performance, I'd bet the brass stand is more stable at least!

Check out the “Penny Stove” as well, apparently there’s lots of experimentation (science!) behind that one.
oops, sorry @frankenbike, should have clicked on the link first

Haha, yeah, I found some nutter's website who'd made about 30 different types and reviewed them all in the past, and went with that one because the pot can sit straight on it and it was supposed to be efficient, but I guess it's harder to assemble properly or something. That or I suck at assembling them (probably a bit of both)

@StevePeel that Yirgacheffe is really really f-ing good.

I'll have a go at making one to compare too.

This is the one I stumbled across.

Having to stay with my mother in law whilst Le Mansion gets a rewire.
She says she has coffee, turns out to be Tassimo. Never had one before, doubt I ever will again.
Went and bought a cafetierre and some Peruvian from Asda. -

Result! 22g inc priming base & penny, 8.5g stove only.
Good flame.

Noice! You're about 3g weenier than me
Edit: this one is much better than the last one I made. Took more time with the widening part and also sanded it down a bit. I used the lid off a golden syrup tin, slightly bigger and heavier than the top of a tin can but no razor sharp edges which is nice

Ace.
Weight diff probably my cheapo scales! I'm going to steal your syrup lid idea too, tin can lid has sharp bits on underside.

Awesome. Now we just have to brew some coffee with them to bring it full circle and get back on topic

Well done @rhb and @frankenbike!

Has anyone modified a V70 to hold the liquid at the the top for a bit before allowing it to filter through? Sort of so you get a pre-brew like in a cafetière but passed through the filter. I’m thinking of plugging the bottom of one and adding a tap.

I'll take mine to the allotment on Sat to give it a whirl.

^ Will outlast the hobo stoves for sure.
In other news 200ml flask arrived today so I can carry an extra brew on the go. Will test tomorrow.

You all probably knew this, but a barbecue chicken roaster makes an ideal moka over alcs burner stand. Depending on burner used, it's a little closer than the 1" sweet spot gap espoused by many DIYers, but it's worked well for me so far. Bonus is that the stand is sized for a beer can!
I'm also trying out a quick and dirty Starlyte that I made, the jury is still out on that one.
