  • Was browsing/researching parts and remembered about grandad's Montine. I believe it's the same AS1913 someone else has online. It has the button push style crown for date set, but it is kind of loose, no strong click between wind and set, and no strong push/return on the date change.

I remember you said bolt/bolt spring when I forgot the name a few months ago. Would it definitely be this and not the set lever spring (or are they synonymous?) Also something about needing hands/dial off to do the repair.

    It's bothering me a little.

  • Yeah, I think I checked maybe the same thing before but they're all blobby looking

  • Ah, now those earlier push-to-set date movements are slightly different. I worked on an Omega Cal 752 which has the same type of date setting.

I can’t find a diagram of how the keyless works look for that movement, but in general, lack of “positive action” between the crown positions is usually down to a faulty “set lever spring” aka “bolt spring” aka lots of other names.....

On the attached diagram it is the “detent spring”. It is only accessible underneath the dial.

Not all keyless works are the same, but this is the most common design. On around 50% of second hand English-made Smiths, this spring is snapped!

  • ....ah.

So I wasn't wrong that they are synonymous terms, and that it looks hella tricky. The movement is positive but weak, so it's not so bad but the crown can be nudged by normal wear action.

I suppose I see why I was quoted £100+ from the watchmaker/repairer now.

  • In other news... seems to run a bit slow. Case/crystal condition is excellent, caseback awful. Movement clean. Looks to be a Felsa 4000N that had a lot of service/repair. Must have been well-loved.

Auction seller sent in a super thin jiffy with no padding. Urgh.

Edit/Update: I adjusted inside to run a little faster. Seems better, but I caught the secons hand stop running a few times. Worrying. Putting a strap on, between the lower lugs on the case it says gold plated "Plaque-Or G.10 Microns" then a V type something, so it is hallmarked.

  • Found a squeezy lemon Jif in the cupboard so....

Lost a few bits of the text and some of the minute markers, but it is an overwhelming improvement, especially after polishing the case too.

  • Looks way better. I don't mind the missing text. It tells a tale without it looking like faux-tina.

  • Thanks, pretty much how I feel. The wear before was just too ugly. Waterstains and patina is okay, but peeling gooey stuff was a bit off.

Still a lot of visible wear to the dial, so not all the character is lost. I was tempted to remove all the text (possibly all but the Onsa crown) but I'll keep it as-is for now.

  • It's an unnecessarily thick watch day today.

  • Will a 43mm Chr. Ward C60 look ridiculous on my 6.5" wrist? I presume so but an ask the audience consensus will stifle the chance I may do something silly today.

  • If you like it, rock it 👍

  • You'll look like you work for Foxtons

  • Very nice, reminds me a lot of a Marathon GSAR...

  • Just putting this here for others. As you say, the Seiko Boutique in Knightsbridge has the SRP777 in stock for the full £379 but it's the "international market" SRP777K1 and not the made in Japan SRP777J1. Also, you have to go to Knightsbridge to get it :-/

  • The boutique isn't for buying stuff! It's just for trying stuff on the buying it elsewhere for less.

  • Just picked this up for not too much, mostly because it’s got a fairly sizeable scratch on the crystal. Bothered other people, didn’t bother me.

Only thing is, can I get the spring bars off? Can I fuck. There’s literally no room to get a tool between them and the lug, like they’ve crammed in bars that are too big. What’s my options? Get a jewellers to cut them off? Magnets? Burn it with fire?

  • What do people think about Oris? I thought this looked quite nice:

  • Can you take a photo of the back of the lugs where they join? Do you want to keep the strap?

  • Looks like they’re shoulderless bars. No room to get a tool behind them, have tried two different tools, razor blade, Stanley blade, dental floss, cotton.

I’d quite like to not break the bracelet.

  • I like them a lot. my dad has a few, including a big crown

  • Really like that!

  • Do you have an iPhone sim removal tool? I've had good results with one of those
