• Anyone who tells you never to brake on a discbrake rim is a victim. Bike rims never used to have machined brake tracks. There's some aluminium there (to hold the air in and keep the rim vaguely round and that). You can wear it down a bit. Use soft pads if you're worried.

    Ish. I'd add the caveats that we're talking about metal rims, and that they have more or less flat and parallel walls. Not all disc-brake rims jump through those hoops. If you want to be really picky, most modern rim-brake rims have some sort of indicator to show when they are at the wear limit, and you obviously won't get that with disc-brake rims.
