  • Have this on Kate's tourer. Middleburn triple spider, 42/26, with an XT double mech. Seems to work pretty well.

  • Stay with 50/34 11-32 but switch to a 20" rear wheel for lower gear inches

  • Then I'd always be riding uphill and I'm no @skinny (sort of pun intended) climber.

  • Oh, nice. I'm cautious of the Middleburn cranks though, don't they snap and then you can't get them replaced any more?

    Edit: also how's the chainline? I guess if it's "1× with granny" you want the big ring in the middle anyway?

  • Hey @amey what cassette did you run with your GS Med cage Di2? Anything bigger than 32T?

  • Tandem frame, different chainrings on each side of the stoker cranks to reduce your ratio?

  • Everything snaps if you look hard enough. There's an endless supply on eBay and the new owner should be getting back into production soon(?)

    Would work with other mtb triples if you can find the rings you want. But Middleburns look nice and there's a good selection of rings. You just have to find the most appropriate derailleurs for your range and the jumps.

    Ultra compact cranksets and spiders are less common, but are good. I'm using a Sugino OX601D, 46/30, with a Shimano CX70 mech.

  • I ran 36t on med cage which at the time; 6870; was supported up to 32t (I think).

    "DIRECT MOUNT 47/32, 46/36, 46/30" would work nicely but your derailler and/or Wolfie is still a much cheaper option.

    Ah, do they do a 165mm version of those cranks? I bet they don't. No bastard ever does.

  • Even worse than Hardknott Pass . Certainly wouldn't want to do that fully loaded.

    Edit: eesh, even the streetview looks tough! It usually makes grades look tame compared to reality.

  • The spindle is available on its own, and should work with any of the Race Face cinch cranks. Certainly I've seen the Atlas crank arms in 165. For the larger or more aggressive gentleman...

    I did, 46/30 and 14-28 freewheel, nice spread of gears and able to climb with 30/28.

    Can see where Hippy is going, I always ride 46/30 as it work on my own, if in group, 48/32 work better.

  • Exactly, as long the person don't mind it being a little ugly without the chainguard, it work perfect.

    @frankenbike chainline actually not an issues, as on a triple, the middle is the middle, so you can ride on the smallest sprocket and the biggest and still not worry about cross chaining.

    Now, with the small 30t, you're never gonna go 30/11, as that not even enough to go fast, you're likely to use it for climbing a hard hill, as you can probably be able to climb a normal hill with 46/28t, this ratio is very similar to the old road-race combo of a 39/23t.

    46/32 is almost a normal climbing gear (37GI, a 34/28 is 32GI).

    Only downside? 46/11 spin out easily, but it's a gearing you use everyday, not for racing in a group.

  • I barely ever spin out on 50/11, and when I do, it's because I've just cycled up a big hill and am going down the other side at 60kph. So I'm usually glad to rest my legs. What's more this is the UK so there are cars, sharp turns, rain water, gravel and potholes everywhere, and on most roads I feel like I'm taking my life in my hands above 60kph. I would rather concentrate on braking and avoiding hazards than trying to pedal at 110RPM. And finally, in my experience the dude who's tucked up at 60kph is going faster than the dude who's still trying to pedal in a normal position.

    Safe to say I personally don't give the slightest shit about top end. If I lived somewhere with 20km smooth tarmac descents and no cars maybe I'd change my tune.

    Edit: just remembered I have some Deore triple cranks, might swap those on. They are absolutely hideous though:

  • Q-factor is very wide tho.

  • Spindle looks similar to Hollowgram. Are they compatible?

  • If I'm taking it easy when commuting (I do sometimes listen to coach) then the 50T is too big for nice chainline, hence the move to a 46 or 48T outer. I can't drop the inner any more than 34T because 110bcd powermeter won't allow it. So, move to larger cassette will solve issue.
    I've just not tested it yet.
