  • Speaking of sub-compact has anyone tried an MTB double crankset with 44/28 or 46/30 on the road? It's basically 1x with ultra-bailout. I've never seen anyone do it, does the FD not work or are there no BBs available or is the Q factor wrong or what?

  • Pretty sure Paul Buckley raced TCRs using a Middleburn sub-compact MTB crankset.

I can't remember what size the chainrings were though.

    EDIT:

" I opted for a British made Middleburn 11 speed super compact chainset and cranks, that’s 46/30 up front matched with an 11/28 cassette on the back. This will give me much closer spaced gearing rather than having to run a compact with a wider-range cassette which I always find rather clunky and over such a long distance would be super irritating! The range will be more than enough for cruising on the flats and rollers but with low enough gears to keep going and climb anything no matter how tired I’m feeling. That’s the theory anyway. The drive train is all Ultegra so all in all very smooth shifting."
