  • Some movements are louder than others, and some ping. They tend to be louder when they are running with good amplitude which can be a good sign. Smiths lever escarpments are loud.

  • Spotted on eBay.

  • Thanks for the replies. Wisely I've left them back at the folks in the safe.

Going to have to see what the home insurance covers.

Little shocked about the value of the Tudor!

  • Does this mean that my second hand theory is wrong?

  • Not sure if upholstery?

  • On that topic...There was a Smiths in the charity shop for £22, I left it because I couldn't get any internet to check details. It wound and ticked. Pretty sure it was a square faced job but didn't know to look for 'Empire', or where it was made. It said 5 jewels so decided to pass just in case it was a cheapo.

  • Like this Oris big crown pro pilot - looks nice on a strap and bracelet.

  • Charge your phone!

  • so today I received my new watch straps from these guys https://www.vulturepremium.com/
they are Italian “Vacchetta”leather, seemgood to me.

quite happy with them (but not sure which watch looks better with which strap... only 22mm watches I have atm).

The Orient dress watch came with a terrible black leather stiff as nails strap, and looked "too" formal for my liking (but obv. I have kept it for now)

  • I have a GMT version of the Oris Big Crown. They’re ace.

  • Anyone for a Fauxmega?

Also, I buy into all the conspiracies. I bitched to the gf above being tired and now look at that coincidence advert.

  • Is this the one with seconds subdial? Wish they did one which kept the clean dial.

  • It is. I see your point, but I still like it.

  • Interesting! I sold an oyster very similar to that about 7 or 8 years ago, for WAAAAY less than it appears they are worth now.

I also have one of those tissot seastars that I wore to my wedding. boxed and everything it as about £120. I think it is the solid gold ones that are quite rare and valuable. I will be stoked if it is now a £500 watch...

  • don't get too excited - he asked for insurance valuation not actual value. I'd discount 25% for a more realistic price

  • I’m not sure what exactly resonates. The seconds hand moves each time the pallet lever “beats” from side-to-side, so thy both move at the same time. Sometimes you can hear a “boing” which I wondered might be the balance spring, but you may have a point about the seconds hand. I guess the only way to know would be to remove it.

  • Only buy “Made In England” and 15+ jewels.

  • Goodo. Thanks.

  • Think I've finally had my fill of this watch. Removed the Seiko-esque hands that were nice but too small. Replaced with a set found on a faulty £1 charity shop Fossil 'Special Edition Chronomaster' yesterday.

I was hoping the G-Shock (301BR World Time) that I also found would work but it won't A/C back to life.

Took forever. Pinged all three hands across the room first, then dropped that chrono second hand a million times.

I suppose next I should replace the dial.

  • That looks cool. I like the flags on the dial and the pops of colour. Whats the story behind it?

  • Thought I'd update you all on the watch search i was undertaking for my dad's 60th. As time went on he went off the idea of a birth year watch more and more after seeing tonnes of overly polished/tarted up Seamasters and the like. Also, as it got closer to his birthday more people said they didn't know what to get him and that they wanted to chip in for something that he wanted. He's ended up with an early 2000's Speedy Pro that he's super happy with.

Thanks to you all for your help and advice.

  • A couple hundred pages back when I bought it last summer we had a little contest who could work it out first. They're naval flags, basically just numbers. Stendardo seemed to use it a lot on their watches, the automatic I have has the same thing going on. It's a bit naff but unusual all the same.

This post shows it in its original state before replacing scratched crystal, painting bezel, original hands, spare nato strap etc...

  • Jesus, that size difference. I'm guessing that smol watch is smol and that the Stendardo is 42mm-ish and not 50+Invicta sized?

  • I've been trawling the nets and there are a couple of sites saying that you should hang on to the Elegantes.

Their reasoning being that they weren't too popular at the time so now they are a bit rare.

As for the Tissot. I'm assuming it's gold plated but might be wrong. Mum bought it for Dad on their first wedding anniversary. Cost £35 apparently.

  • The Stendardo is pretty small, that other watch is just super tiny.
