Ok, so I got a reply "Serial number was from early 2016, so probably out of warranty"... For some reason they had ignored the proof of purchase, which shows it's inside warranty time.
Now that I pointed that out they will fix it as warranty repair.
What annoys me about interactions like this is that companies seem to always me one-worded, offering an explanation only when prompted. Someone with a less stand-offish character would probably just have let that slide and went "oh, ok" and coughed up some extra $$$
