Are hubs more consistent?
The hubs will be the dimension Shimano intended, but the issue with rims isn't inconsistent manufacture, it's inconsistent measurement and sometimes unannounced design changes.
can I use hub measurements from the shimano site?
Mostly, but they are not infallible when it comes to transcribing from the manufacturing drawings to the published data
best to wait til I have hubs in hand?
In the end, yes.

Excellent, thanks for the advice, will be patient!

• #7279
is that the roger musson one? how did you find the building process, easy?
-
• #7280
Any advice whether I should lace the hubs I've mentioned on my previous post?
-
• #7281
Yep, pretty simple. I'm a measure once cut twice, oh that's not quite right, it will probably be ok kinda DIY guy.
I only had some thin MDF for most of it (half his recommended thickness), a drill and a jigsaw. Turned out fine if a little wonky. When u put the wheel in it doesn't matter, as long as the wheel is held securely and generally straight. Made it loads easier. Hardest part was filling a nipple driver out of an old screw driver, but that turned out good too in the end.

Yes that looks right. For disc brake wheels the front and rear left side the head in spokes pull when braking. The rear right is laced the same way.
If you alwsys build asymmetric I think that's the right way round starting right side rear and left side front then all wheels whether rim it disc brake are build correctly without having to think about it.

You worry to much.
-
• #7284
Ha! Thanks, I’ll build them up then.
-
• #7285
thanks man, reckon I'll give it a try!
-
• #7286
Thanks for everyone’s input. I’m not dished correctly so that needs some work, I did move it a little but was a bit pushed for time having found a Philips screw in my car tyre which needed attention, this had no effect on the movement. But when I tightened the QR really tight (much much tighter than on my rim brake wheels) the movement all but went away.

Yes disc brake wheels have to be clamped tight. Think about it the braking force are trying to move the wheel in the dropouts.

What inner rim width would people recommend for the following:
29*2.4 MTB tyres
700*38 gravel tyres
700*30 gravel /road tyres -
• #7289
24-25mm
-
• #7290
Nice one, but I mean for each one respectively.
-
• #7291
Wouldn't it depend on what else you want to do on it? Would you ever fit 25mm tyres to the 700x30 gravel/road wheels, for example? Will you want to go bigger on the gravel wheels? etc.

• #7292
but I mean for each one respectively
Still 24-25 for the 700C, 28-30 for the 29er

They look very similar to the Kinlin ADHN

I have ordered them as shipping is free.
I will report!

They look very similar to the Kinlin ADHN
Halo often do rebadged kinlin rims so it could be the same

• #7296
I've got these Vince, built them up with some Miche RG2 hubs on my child transporterbike.
They look nice, build well, its a reasonably lightweight wheelset for what is essentially a hybrid. -

Tredz fucked me over though, so I think I bought them from halo direct.

Does anyone have a source for spares for an Ambrosio Zenith front road hub?
I'm after the axle and a 'bearing cover' (or whatever that part might be called).
-
• #7299
spares for an Ambrosio Zenith
@cycleclinic says they are Novatec A171, not that it helps much as Novatec spare parts support is close to non-existent too, but you may save a few quid when you bow to the inevitable and buy a new hub from which to take a transplant.

Novatec A171
Ah, that may well be handy. Thanks.
So I've taken delivery of a pair of rims (dt r460db) for my first attempt at a wheel build. Hubs (shimano slx m6000) due Monday.
I have read that best practice is to measure both before ordering spokes. Are hubs more consistent? I.e. can I use hub measurements from the shimano site and measure rims to calculate spoke length so I can order today? Or best to wait til I have hubs in hand?
