Deliveroo

  • They were charging £50 for all the kit. I’m sure you would of been told if that was still the case. The roll top bag is a massive improvement over the old bag.

  • New record carry tonight;

    1 x 1.5 ltr bottle
    6 x cans
    5 x burgers & fries

    💪🏻

  • Yeah it was definitely free, I just mean theoretically there doesn't seem to be anything stopping me from walking away now with a free jacket, bag and helmet, and that presumably if I were to try to do that it would be stated somewhere in the terms that I'd have to return it or pay for it. But I don't intend to do that anyway so no worries.

Won't get a free evening til sometime next week as I'm off to Sweden for the weekend but interested to give it a go!

  • Anyone start before the kit was free and hasn't paid it off yet? Do they still charge you?

I started back when they took it out yur earnings and I haven't done any deliveries since they changed, if I was gonna get all my earnings rather than have half taken off for the kit I might be more tempted to get my finger out and do some.

  • My friend signed up for Deliveroo when she was in-between jobs. She got the full kit, when they included phone mount, battery pack etc. She ended up starting her new job sooner than expecting. Didn’t do any deliveries and still has all the kit, never paid anything for it. It’s been nearly a year and she hasn’t heard from Deliveroo.

Still no indication from the government about WHEN this is going to happen. They keep >seeming to talk about it but still no laws have changed.

Come work for Pedal Me - already doing all that stuff.

  • I'm on my first shift right now. So far I've waited around since 7 (20 mins as of this comment) and nothing has happened. App says "online" and that's it.

Has something gone wrong or is this normal? My GPS is a bit funky, could that be fudging it up a bit?

Edit: okay, something came through! Hooray

    First hour only 1 delivery?

  • I've found Frank sometimes takes a while to wake up, wipe the dribble from his chin and get his shit together. Once jobs start coming your way (in peak times) it's usually all good from thereon in.

    How did it go?

  • Yeah, not bad at all. A lot more waiting than I anticipated. I would wait around for 30 minutes, get a delivery, ride there in 5 minutes, wait 10 minutes for them to prepare stuff, ride 5 minutes to the person, deliver it and then start over. So only managed 4 deliveries in 3 hours and about 15km of cycling.

I think I'd be better off in one of the other zones, that one was nice in that I was never more than 5 minutes from my flat but I think there'd have been way more deliveries in the other ones. There are vastly more restaurants and people living in them. (It was Edinburgh West.)

Not sure how the pay is going to work, if I'm paid per delivery that's going to be a pretty shocking rate per hour. But on the other hand it was a 50% tip rate so that's nice.

Seems to me that the best way for me to improve the time for each delivery would be to become faster at removing my lights and lock. Might get some cheapie lights that I can leave on without worrying about them getting nicked. Not sure what to do about the lock.

  • It has been quite the last few weeks because of Easter holidays. Hopefully it should pick up over the next week as the students return to uni.

I’ve heard in some zones Deliveroo have started doing a minimum order incentive per hour. If you don’t average 2 deliveries an hour for your time online they “top up” your pay.

It’s always worth waiting near the busy restaurants. In my city Wagamama, yo-sushi, Byron, kfc are really popular.

Also try to chat with other riders in your zones, the best way to get info.

Most cities have (unofficial) whatsapp groups started by the riders. Usually have to ask around other riders to get someone to add you.

  • Sounds like you were a little unlucky. Slow restaurant wait times perhaps? 10 mins isn't great. A few double orders and things get a lot better. Are you going to do another couple of shifts in that area to see if this evening was typical?

Your ride times sound similar to mine (3-15mins). I manage 3 an hour on average but some nights that can be hard work, some nights pretty easy. Where are you losing time? Are you finding places and handing over quickly? An earpiece is useful for when local knowledge fails and GPS is called upon. GPS can fuck you up tho ... local knowledge is best. Nothing can help you for some drops when it's to a hidden fucking house in the garden of another house (with a house inside), or the numbers have fallen off the seemingly every door in the street, or if the customer has put a completely incorrect postcode (true stories!!!).

Glad to hear people are tipping.

You are right - the little time saving things are worth thinking about. If locking up takes 30s then you could easily be spending 10 mins a night on this ... that's a extra job right there.
If you watch the guys/girls who earn next to nothing it's clear why: they spend 4 mins on arrival at each job dorking around before announcing their arrival (plus time moaning to me about not getting paid enough).

Re' locks and lights: I carry a mini d and a thin cable lock thing and use whichever is most suitable. 8/10 times I don't lock it at all but instead put it somewhere within arms reach, visible and/or uncarriable. Often I prefer to wait near the bike anyway rather than near a hot, smelly kitchen.
I suggest fixing your lights to your bike (cable ties, use a dynamo, use something bolted onto the mudguard or fork crown etc). As I'm sure you're aware, having a couple of lights means you can lose track of charging and still be safe. I find that's super applicable to Deliveroo :-)

I hope things pick up. It can be a good earner, honest.

  • @farewell Yeah, there are still a few students around here but they've got exams or something so maybe they're not ordering food. There were only two restaurants (2 deliveries from each) that I went to so perhaps there aren't many places to order from here. No big deal, I'll just give it a go in one of the other zones, it's not much further.

re. other riders I only saw 1 all night! And no chance to chat to him as we were both delivering stuff. But I will definitely speak to others in the other zones.

@miro_o I might try that zone again but I'll try one of the others first. Really I think it was just a lack of people ordering food in the area. Finding each of the places was easy even with my dodgy GPS, my delivery times were 7/9/10/13 minutes, wait times appear to have been 10/14/19/25 minutes! I'm not sure that 25 is accurate though, didn't feel like I was there that long.

Bit of experimentation with zones, bits on the bike, rucksacks and so on and I'll be reet! I'm not starving/homeless - I have no income but am living on my savings for a few months, and this is just a bit of a top up on the side. So it's not the end of the world to have a bad shift.

  • Much better in the other two zones today, I did 13 deliveries in about 5 hours which isn't too bad, and £7 in tips. The downside is I was riding up a lot more hills and over a lot more cobbles. Also I was very thirsty and hungry the whole time so I'm definitely going to bodge some bottle cages onto that frame. Fun though and a great day for it.

Edit: question, I can't find what the fucking fee per delivery is anywhere on the internet or on the app. Do I have to just wait until they pay me?

  • Glad you had a better shift this time. I always carry a water bottle and usually end up stopping at a Tesco local for snacks. Most restaurants will fill your bottle up for you as well.

Did you receive an email that stated the delivery fee? In most zones it’s £4 per drop.

Edit - had a search on the Deliveroo riders (unofficial) Facebook group and someone said it’s £4.25 in Edinburgh.

I have seen people mention a Edinburgh riders whatsapp group so would be worth posting on the Facebook group to ask about it, if you are interested.

    A link to the group...

  • Ah great, yeah it was buried in one of those emails and is £4 then. I didn't read those emails in great detail because it was during the "onboarding", and I got about 15 in total and I was a bit rushed to get through them and get it over with.

Edit: I asked another rider about the Whatsapp group, she said someone tried to add her to it but it didn't work so she can't help me. Will be really helpful; apparently last night was really busy in Edinburgh South, meanwhile numpty over here was waiting 30 mins between deliveries. So hopefully there'll be people on there saying "don't bother tonight in this zone" and so on.

  • They should have told you your fee at onboarding.

Edit ... sounds like they did!

Sounds like you’ve found your zone. Good stuff.

  • Yep. Thanks for the help guys, think I should be all set from now on! And only 3 more deliveries til I trigger the sign-up bonus so that's nice.

  • You can speed things up a bit by taking your bike into restaurants when you can. Not all places are ok with it but most fast food places seem not to mind! You'll naturally get faster when you get into it a bit and your local knowledge improves (no matter how good it is now it will definitely get better!)

  • Seems like the students have returned this weekend in my city. It’s been a lot busier since Friday compared to the last few weeks, been doing 2-3 jobs an hour. Also the weather is good!

  • Oh man, I preferred the snow. I’m struggling to get two jobs an hour tonight!

  • On the plus side there is an open air jazz festival in my zone 🎷🎷🎷 rolling around on my sweet fixeh, living the dream (for £8.50 phr)

    #fuckmysaturdaynight

  • Worth noting that the main union representing Deliveroo/ Uber etc riders in a lot of cities outside London is the IWW if anybody was interested in signing up to a union.

  • The Deliveroo business model has self employment of the riders integral. It’s a tech company, their tech allows people to pick up and put down work far easier than full employment.

Can Marxists and their lawyers please just fuck off?
