• Just roadsafed a dickhead driver who drove in to the back of my bike whilst I was sat stationary waiting for the light to change.

    I exercised none if the patience and let-it-be gospels I sang last week. Must try harder.

  • Don't beat yourself up about it. You were driven into with 2 tonnes of vehicle by someone not paying attention.

    Actual collisions should be reported to the local copshop, though, iirc. Roadsafe may tell you this themselves.

    (The copshop may do fuck all about it, obvs.)

  • drove in to the back of my bike whilst I was sat stationary

    Maliciously or just through inattention?

    I ask because I had someone ram me from behind in a massive Merc because the lights for the adjacent lane changed and I think this is a general issue that needs addressing.

  • Yeah I thought this too, but the form said this:

    "Thank you for getting in touch. If you were involved in a collision as a driver or rider you must personally report the incident to police as soon as reasonably possible and, in any case, within 24 hours of the collision. No one else may do this on your behalf. See the Road Traffic Act 1988, Section 170 for further details.

    You can report it by either completing the following form, going to your local police station or telling a police constable."

    So from that last sentence I took that as a no need to go physically in person.

  • I don't know. The lights were still red, and were about to change to amber. He was either anticipating it and forgot I was right fucking in front of him, or he did it on purpose. When I turned around he was gesturing at the lights to say "hey, they're green, it's all your fault!". They weren't green, and regardless, cunt.

  • Traffic lights go from red to green, no amber at that point.

    Irrespective, he is wrong

  • This one specifically or all traffic lights? Because usually they go red to red and amber to green

  • Amber is BEFORE red.

  • and red+amber is before green, just as that picture says

  • My first post was wrong - red to red and amber. But not, as the OP said, red to amber. It goes amber to red.
    Long day ...

  • Uh - that's all bollox.

    Red & Amber = Go.
    Green = Go.
    Amber = Go. But faster.
    Red = Go. If you can get away with it and there's no camera.

  • For the colourblind

    Grey = Go
    Other Grey = Stop? nah probably Go
    Other Other Grey = fuck knows, I'll go anyway

  • Nearly wiped out this morning by white van man on his mobile. Closest pass I’ve had in 9 years of commuting.

    Driver then refused to put his phone down despite my remonstrations and passed me 4 further times still texting/what’s app.

    All on my go-pro/fly 12.

    Road safed for the first time ever. Hope they actually do something.

  • the colourblind

    Top, middle and bottom.

  • This one needs a massive fine. Commercial drivers can get up to £2k for this, hopefully your reminder was polite enough for them to look completely bad in your films.

  • Strikes me that all the camera-ed up drivers and riders on the roads will eventually change things provided prosecutions do actually happen. I wonder if there’s data for the increase in prosecutions based on road users’ video evidence?

  • It's a police force lottery though, some forces act on what to me seem average close passes and some do nothing if the cyclist doesn't deviate. So the police basically use the excuse you know the driver would, "I never hit you!"

  • Point taken.

    This thread is making me want to get cameras, mind.

  • “Police said they won't prosecute as I didn't need to change
    direction, but if I was a less experienced cyclist and had thrown
    myself to the ground they would have considered a prosecution.”

  • Back to the topic on whether to confront or not to confront, I had gotten a little fed up after a BMW had overtaken me at speed and close three times on the same stretch of road, only to have to slam on brakes and stop for waiting traffic at three sets of traffic light at which I duly overtook him. Later on a separate blue, massive BMW must have passed me at 6omph in a 30, before slamming on his brakes to wait behind another car, waiting for traffic to pass so they could go around a parked car. Said BMW got right up behind them, shaped to overtake them, and beeped at them.

    In retrospect all of that should have been red flags, but he was driving so fast and obnoxiously I couldn't resist a 'you need to slow the fuck down mate' as I trundled past on his inside, through his open window. The car in front cleared the parked car and I was about to do the same when I felt something on my leg. It was the BMW's front wing pressing in, trapping me behind the parked car where upon the driver unleashed the most froth-speckled tirade of Khorne beserker hate speech I have perhaps ever seen. I mean he was so angry it was comical. I felt sure he was going to get out and I didn't have my D-Lock. Then suddenly he just squealed away and immediately turned left at ridiculous speeds still shouting at me.

    Clearly the driver was already unhinged over something by the way he was driving, and I must have just pushed him over the edge. I really hope he got some instant karma by either getting pulled over or by crashing and ruining his pretty blue Bimma.

    So the question remains, to confront or not to confront? The answer remains whether you have a D-Lock on you or not.

  • So what is the forum recommended way to wield a D-lock? Asking for a friend.

  • I've said this before (several times). Don't confront.

    I have first hand experience. I confronted after a close pass (well, just waved an angry hand actually) and the psycho ran me over. Broad daylight with lots of witnesses. Never caught. I was lucky but could easily have been killed if I'd rolled the other way or a hundred other possibilities.

    You're on a bike - they're in a ton of metal. For the outcome it just isn't worth it. They're unlikely to have a sudden epiphany about respecting other road users and that is your best case scenario.

    Instead breath in and get home safely - it really is all that matters. Then track them down and hammer frozen sausages into their lawn* in the dead of night.

    *substitute suitable medium where appropriate.

  • Depends on if one intends to just shatter a cheekbone or completely decapitate...
