  • Equally, before Keo and eventually speedplay, I started on SPDs and they were fine. Double sidedness makes easy clipping in and they hold well. She’ll fall over at traffic lights. It’s inevitable. But probably only the once. Adjustable tension is nice so you can set it nice and easy release to start with.
I think mtb pedals for road are all pretty much as good as each other for starting out. SPD, atac, S-track, eggbeaters

  • Yeah cheers all. I started on SPD, in fact the very same platform SPD pedals I'm giving her. I used ATAC here as they had a bit better foot retention for fixed. But basically, no reason to use them over SPD so I'll go that route. Think I got rid of my SPD cleats though, doh.

  • Anyone tried these new Look X-Track pedals? Takes SPD cleat, apparently 6 degrees free float.

Edit: bought a pair + some spacers to test with. Fallback is speedplays - comfortable on the biek but setup faff, wear and expense.

  • How did you go with that?
I have been using Speedplay frogs ever since I had bad problems with SPDs, for road bike and gravel bike. Now it's getting super hard to get hold of the cleats, and I have nearly worn out my last pair. So I am looking for the next best thing. with lots of float and recessed cleats. Reliable spares supply is a plus. Might have to go crank brothers.

  • I'll let you know when I've got them and put some miles in. Recessed and knee-friendly is what I'm looking for too as this one bike does commuting duties as well as long rides.

  • Never go crank bros

  • Care to elaborate? I've been contemplating getting a pair as a mate is selling a pair of candies fairly cheap.

  • I'd also be keen to hear why. I know there are plenty of stories about, but I've used CB's, SPD's and ATACs and keep coming back to the ol' Eggbeaters for CX and for the fixed gear. Have popped out of SPD's riding fixed quite a lot, but have yet to pop out of CB pedals unintentionally, also never got stuck into them either, which I have with SPD's

  • CBs were my first clipless pedal system, was interested because they seemed like the easiest to get used to, which they probably are.

I've had two pairs of their pedals , both came off at the spindle during a ride, and I heard similar stories from others. Pretty sure the consensus out there is they are terribly made.

Also since moving to atacs, I've realised the way their cleats are designed that they wear out and become useless about 10x faster than atacs.

Also I have a video of me popping out of CBs and landing on my knees. Couldn't ride for about 2 weeks.

  • To offer a counterpoint, I’ve been using CB egg beaters for years, mainly racing cx with them, and have had zero problems.

  • I have

    • egg beaters
    • DH mallets
    • the traily egg beaters with a bit of platform (candies?)

    They are all good.

You need to be very careful with shoe set up and you need to periodically rebuild the pedal itself - replace the bearings and whatnot. It’s kinda worth it for the float, ease of entry and mud expelling capability

  • But you and @andyp are delicate waifs. Your opinion on kit does not apply to the vast majority of overbuilt cyclists.

  • yeahbut I get rowdy on mine whereas the vast majority just dick about on the club run

  • Careful how?

  • Still not convinced, I haul my sorry backside up some 15+% gradients on an 82GI during my commute using Eggbeaters, so put a lot of torque through them, and they hold up just fine.

Whatever works though. My only minor issue with CB’s is that the new once’s don’t have pedal spanner options to remove them, only Allen keys. I still use old ones though so not a massive issue for me :)

  • You commute on 82"?

  • The ‘bows’ that clamp the cleat can wreck the sole of the shoe if there’s not enough shoe tread making contact with pedal spindle (on egg eaters) or platform (other models).

  • What about the steel plates? Don't they prevent that?

  • I just had a browse and it seems the look ones are really hard to get here. So I ordered a pair of eggbeater pedals to see how they feel. If they're decent I might look up aftermarket spindles and stuff, and candies and dual sided ones for my other bikes.

  • You are less likely to get hot spots if some of the load is shared across the width of the sole. I would have thought. They will rock too if everything goes through the bows.

  • Seems like Look are buying up a slew of old mtb platforms.

  • Yeah, it allows me to keep a decent lick on the descents too, while also just about getting me up the steep stuff! I get 200m of descent and ascent each way on my commute.

  • My knees hurt just from reading this. But I haven't ridden fixed since I left London.

  • You get used to it, I naturally choose a big gear anyway even on geared bikes so I guess I’m predisposed to it.

  • ...A load of Shimano spd patents just expired
