  • Bit of a geo-nerd ramble and looking for some input on a fork swap as I'm totally out of the loop with this stuff...

I'm looking at switching out the fork on my 1x1 back to something steel. It's a 2008 model which originally came with the 80mm corrected 413mm a2c, 43mm offset fork (71 HA, 73ST, 67mm trail). I picked it up with a White Bros Rock Solid this is 445 a2c, 44mm offset, my questionable math says this has slackened off the HA to 69.5 (to the nearest .5) and bumps the trail up to 79mm. It's stable, a bit swoopy in the corners (long stem probably contributes to this a bit) but it's a pretty easy to ride. Longer term I'm hoping to take this on a long, offroad ramble and I want it to be pretty fun to ride.

Older 1x1 forks are near impossible to come by down here. The easiest options are the non-sus corrected Troll or 27.5 ECR forks or I take my chances trying to find a suitable Kona or Salsa fork and have someone take a torch to it. I've done some more math with the two Surly options they come out at 70.5HA/72mm trail and 69HA/80.5mm trail respectively. The ECR obvious comes fairly close to the fork I've got at the moment, but while I'm cruising around Melbourne it's kind of hard to judge how the bike is going to handle offroad and I ran stupid size wheels in my newer 1x1 back home so that's not a great comparison either.

Looking for a bit of a sense check and/or any input to help me make sense of all these numbers and get this bike built for fun, fun and more fun.

  • What brake mounts do you need?

In the U.K. there’s lots of basic steel mtb forks on eBay that’s do a passable impression of a 1x1 fork. Maybe not got quite as much tyre clearance but enough.

There’s also forks like On One and Gusset segmented ones. Nice short a2c, sometimes just canti mount, sometimes canti and disc. I’ve been watching one on eBay just now as I want s fork with a disc mount to replace my canti only 1x1 fork.
