• Fair enough, would have nabbed a few bits off it if you were keeping and splitting but ah well

  • Then I just get stuck with a million handlebars nobody wants

Unremarkable used full bikes just aint worth much and I should suck it up.

  • The way to make money on a bike on eBay is to split it up and sell the parts. I learned this lesson the hard way.

  • Yeah I know....but who's got the time for that and all the stupid f*cking questions people have.

    Probably me. Bugger.

Oh well. I'm gonna suck it up.

  • If I sell something on ebay and use their postage (Shutl or whatever it is called) does ebay notify the buyer of the tracking details and whatnot or do I need to send a message with it?

  • the former - as soon as you print the label the item gets tagged with the number

  • Cheers, I hoped that was the case but it wasn't clear.

  • Okey dokey artichokey… Thinking of going back to the bay with the Grun, will split and sell the frame and wheels separate as per advice on here (cheers). Plus with the Litespeed sell altogether as the groupset is not expensive and will be a pig to sell separately.

I was thinking 99p starts, should I set a reserve or not? if so how much, plus is there an optimum time for an auction to end? Thoughts please.

  • A reserve makes it much less likely to sell in my experience. When I sell I either do 99p start, or make the start bid the lowest amount I'd be willing to accept. A lower starting price will get a lot more people watching which means more phone notifications going out 15 mins before it ends. I usually make auctions end late evening Sundays although I've not really experimented to find the best time.

  • Thanks, thats very useful.

  • I always imagined Sunday evening would be a good one, or Monday evening.

    Probably completely wrong!

  • Sunday evening got me good dolla for a wheelset I just sold, and 99p start with no reserve a record number of watchers. And that was with pretty rubbish pics

  • Okay cheers guys... let's do this thing. Sales threads locked!

  • Something I posted out to an eBay buyer got destroyed in transit.

Obviously I'm going to refund the buyer 100% and claim on the postage insurance.

But it's not clear what the process is for the buyer - should he open a return claim? I believe he has two weeks from receipt to do so but I have a feeling the insurance claim will take longer than that. But if he opens a complaint it's likely he'll have to post the thing back, which we both want to avoid.

    Anyone dealt with this before?

  • When I had a record trashed by the fine folks delivering the post in SA I don't believe we opened up a return claim. We dealt with it all by eBay messages, him sending me photos of the packing and the damage for the claim then I refunded the purchase and opened a Royal Mail claim that was surprisingly painless.
Are the return claims linked to conflict resolution centre? If so I'd want to avoid that at all costs anyway.

  • I usually deal with it informally, but it depends on whether I trust the buyer or not.

There's an "arrived damaged" option under returns and eBay don't require proof of return postage, unless you dispute having received it back.

Your claim with the carrier doesn't concern the buyer, so they're not obliged to wait for them to compensate you, before you refund them.

  • Thanks guyz - the buyer seems to be happy dealing with it informally, which is good.

  • So Shutl have refunded me the full value - woohoo. I think the buyer can open a return request and select the item damaged option and then I refund him and everything is tidied up?

The value was £90 or so - I guess Shutl won't put in a claim for the item and the buyer just keeps / disposes of it?

  • That was quick! I've not dealt with Shutl, but presumably if they wanted the damaged item they'd have requested it before paying you.

Going through eBay is the safest option, to avoid the possibility of them doing so when you've already refunded them "informally".

You should get your seller's fees back too.

  • Yarp that's what we've done. Phew seems to have worked out OK....

  • I look forward to seeing you in the "Fuck EBay" thread...

  • Okay... after a complete pummelling on my Litespeed. This thing... The GRUN is up on the bay the frame fork and thomson stem and seatpin for 390. It's not shifting. Was advised on here to sell the wheels separately. Thing is tot up the frame and only the included bits up and its over £700 and new, so... what would be fair? Do I sell the frame with no bits for £275? The frames a Red Hook Crit jobbie from Singapore where theres a huge fixie scene £600 cost over there, plus import new, it wees all over a lot of track frames in materials and fabrication, but think as not many know about the brand it might as well be foffa...

  • Honestly, I'd never heard of Grun and just because it's big in Singapore...

Seems simple to say it but if you put some snide keywords in your listing title like 'not Dolan, MASH' etc and 'As new, 50% off RRP' you'll get a lot more people checking it out.

  • Time to get my snide on! Cheers!
