He needs a second dynamo by the sounds of it - not wind. Strange he doesnt have a back up..

Shiit. I think he's had battery lights before, so might be something with the new untested parts or loose wires or something. Or just that those thru axle dynamos are not that durable, still.

The other factor is climbing. Stephane is pretty small, right? How big is Abdullah? It might be differnet once they get past Melbourne in the last third of the route

The roads in Oz are way better than Europe, I'm fatter than him and mine is still going strong. Maybe he just hit the only pothole in 2000k and shook something loose?
-
• #1256
I was thinking exactly that. That 200km lead might prove handy once the climbing starts.
However - abdullah knows these climbs well - living between radaleide and Melbourne for a while now.

The flies are fecking awful. But they keep you moving forward lol.
-
• #1258
I didn't see a pothole before Nundroo. Seriously, there are none. There was one before Adelaide and a few more in Victoria when it gets busier.
He could have got a dead kangaroo -

Abdullah is a big dude. About 6’ 1” and very muscular. But he’s a grinder. Mashs the big gears up the hills with ease.
-
• #1260
If he has 200km then he can walk up the hills

Too right, the March flies, they are bastards, they kick in just after nullarbor rh, where I guess you are now. You'll be rid of them by Penang but they are horrible. Bites can get infected too so keep swatting them off

Ok, stephane might take 10 minutes out of him up falls creek.
Just needs to find another 198km and he's got it sewn up -

Most probably yes. But i think Rishi's TA dynamo hub failed in few hundred kms of training in there, though that was one of the first ones and there seemed to be something wrong with those.

I'm planning on getting some of that Veet stuff, in case it was the big horse flies/march flies that fucked my tendons in TABR last year.

Veet
Ask for Deet. Veet is different

Yeah, that stuff.
Veet was what my muppet missus pack >100ml of on the way to Spain.
Duh, how many times have you flown, deary?

Scottish midges don't like Avon Skin So Soft, although no idea if it works for USAian bugs.

Curious if it's an SP or SON dynamo?
He could order a new dynamo wheel in Adelaide if he can cycle the 800km in daylight. Bit of a setback, but at least he would get some decent sleep.

He's not filmed training using a dynamo and has Exposure lights hashtags on his instafacetweets:

Hmm does look like a rather large front hub.
Could be using a rim one though I guess?

Abdullah has been breaking often a bit in the last 24hrs compared to previous and there is now the pack getting close to Stephane, so maybe one of those goes for it. Going to be interesting.
-
• #1272
Oh indeed, he uses that hashtag all the time and here's a picture of him at the start: https://www.instagram.com/p/BgcSvcsj8nK/
No wonder he can't get any current out of the hub if there is no dynamo. Must be tired :D
-
• #1273
That ain't no dynamo hub!

• #1274
Batteries failing him are they @frank9755 ? :)

That hair must be worth -6 watts.
Yeah, though I think Stephane has been rather strong towards the end of a race before. His position in TCR last year on the checkpoints was 16-11-10-9-9, so he might be getting a second wind at some point.
