Distributed the grounds by expertly knocking the basket against the wall and the difference is stunning. Cheers!
Makes me wonder why I didnt think of this myself, but hey ho.

There are better ways to distribute, knocking can create layering in the puck which can also lead to channelling. But what you are doing will be better than tamping an offset mound.

Are you saying I should stir it up?

My setup, a pre-millenium La Pavoni and a doserless Compak K6. Replaced the doser with a 3D-printed chute, still need to sort out the coffee heaping up in the chute. I think I'll make a small shovel to just scrape it out.
And plan to replace the Pavoni's pressostat with PID control. Almost have the temperature sensing sorted, then I need to wire up a relay and get to tuning the parameters.

Pure intent.
As Alan Partridge would say : "the look that says this man is in control of his coffee"

Yup stir it to level it. Can break up 'boulders' too although unsure how important that is as tamp then makes it one big boulder puck.
Matt Perger / Barista Hustle has written some good thoughts around all this which pointed back to combined horizontal & vertical tapping as being effective enough at the point I tuned out. (I still stir though #rebelwithoutaclue)

Best coffee gadget I ever bought: The timer switch for the filter machine. I no longer wake up to despair and loathing, just the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

Anyone tried lab-type hot plates with their moka pots?
I'm interested but haven't found much on the net.
Do they get hot fast enough?
Is that even important?
I know they get hot enough, most of the minis get to about 350-400º C.

Yet to be proven, but people are working on this.
Use whatever gives you the best result for your system.

Heat is heat, for a Moka pot control is better than speed imo

Stirring is knowm. As the Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) and is very effective at removing the boulders caused by static build up ( we think). Another way of doing this is to dose into a metal or plastic pot, and then pour into the portafilter, has a similar effect and is a lot cleaner.

I take it grinding the night before (arf) and letting the water sit doesn't have a noticeable impact on taste?

disclaimer - haven't used a btc for years since I worked in a pretty awful restaurant, but I've heard positive things about Jura and their E6 is around that price if you shop around:
