Might well be it, it tends to heap up towards one of the edges. I'll try distributing the coffee evenly before tamping. Cheers.

Distributed the grounds by expertly knocking the basket against the wall and the difference is stunning. Cheers!
Makes me wonder why I didnt think of this myself, but hey ho.

After drilling out the portafilter of my pre-millenium Pavoni with a holesaw I can closely inspect the way the coffee leaves the basket. And I regularly get these "rogue jets" of coffee that seem to sort of find a way through the puck without much resistance. Can be seen on the left around the 7 second mark in this video:

Could it be my tamping technique? Or do I need a finer grind?
