  • After drilling out the portafilter of my pre-millenium Pavoni with a holesaw I can closely inspect the way the coffee leaves the basket. And I regularly get these "rogue jets" of coffee that seem to sort of find a way through the puck without much resistance. Can be seen on the left around the 7 second mark in this video:

    Could it be my tamping technique? Or do I need a finer grind?

  • Might well be it, it tends to heap up towards one of the edges. I'll try distributing the coffee evenly before tamping. Cheers.

    Makes me wonder why I didnt think of this myself, but hey ho.
