Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Just got round to an overdue checkup on my bike, and on the front mechanical Spyre, noticed that the pads have worn more on the rear edges than the front. Is this something that can be resolved in set up, as there was no mention of it in the instructions? Cheers.

  • Fitting trp spyres with a 160 rotor on the rear but the bolts in the box are too short . Anyone know what length i need and preferable in black from where ?

  • I'm new to discs and need some help/advice on replacement pads.

The bike runs 105 11 speed hydro, so what should i be looking at? What's the disc equivalent of Swisstop Pro BXP's?

    Cheers

  • Standard pads.

If you want more power, go for metal pads instead of resin and last longer, but they're more on/off and wear rotor out sooner than later.

Honestly, even the shittest disc pads outshine the best rims pads, just get either Shimano K02S (resin) or K04S* (metal).

*please be sure that the rotor is compatible with metal pads, also these pads are compatible with the RS505 flat mount calipers which I presumed you have.

  • Having said that, you did prompt me to look into the Swissstop Disc 34, but still think it's a lots of money for little gain compare to going from normal to swissstop/koolstop rims pads.

  • Thanks Ed

Here's a pic of the brakes

  • Post mount.

In that case, either G01S(resin) or G04S (metal), double check your rotor wear on top to ensure that there's no "lips" between the braking surface and non-braking surface, the disc rotor should said "metal" or "resin only" to allow you to choose which pads to go for.

Don't forget to spread out the old pads with a flat headed screw driver to "reset" the piston for the new pads otherwise the rotor will be a tight squeeze (if you have to spread it out with the new pads, use a cloth on the screwdriver and carefully pry it open).

  • Fantastic. Thanks for the lesson

  • Well they look nice

  • Resin pads? quite keen by the flat mount version, I doubt this offer improved clearance, but it should feel better especially with 4 pistons and wider pads.

    How is it so far?

  • I have a flat mount on the rear.

Was great on the 200 yards back from the bike shop.

  • Do 6-bolt hubs ever need facing?

Brand new Hope E4, brand new Hope rotor and a brand new Son 28.

I had to swap the hose and bleed port from one side to the other so have bled the caliper, but the pads run very close to the rotor and rub for about 300˚.

As best as I can tell the rotor is true, so I can only think the face of the hub isn't.

Suggestions as to how I can gain a bit more clearance between the pads and rotor welcome.

  • Not to my knowledge, too much oil in the reservoir perhaps?

Perhaps a different rotor might be worth trying, not all rotor are trued out of the package.

  • Adjust the caliper so it only rubs for 60 degrees?

  • too much oil in the reservoir perhaps

I didn't know that could be a problem.

I was careful to fill it to the brim and roll the diaphragm into place, following these instructions from Epic Bleed Solutions.

  • There’s something about the whole fluid over fill I don’t get either

    These are open systems

If you overfill them the fluid will just exit at the reservoir top, albeit slowly

  • With road brakes, overfilling have it's advantage to provide a sharper bite, however on some MTB brakes, it's a little too sharp, sometime I have to open the port and squeeze a bit out and close it (while squeezing), this open up the piston a bit more.

  • Got some used BR-RS805 calipers and getting all the little fiddly bits to fit to my bike. However, can seem to find the capliper fixing bolt A (Shimano part Y8N204000) https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes/shimano-brrs505-caliper-fixing-bolt-a-y8n204000/ in stock anywhere. Is there another bit I can get that will serve the same purpose as this thing won't be in stock till June.

  • It is a m5 bolt with a permanent washer on. So you could use another bolt instead

  • I bought some second hand TRP Hy Rd's, only one had pads so I bought some new Uber ones
    these:
    https://www.uberbikecomponents.com/view-product/Uberbike-TRP-HY-RD-Spyre-Hylex-Parabox-2012-Parabox-R-Kevlar-Disc-Brake-Pads

I also bought some new rotors, these:
    https://www.tweekscycles.com/components/brake-rotors/shimano-sm-rt64-m665-slx-centre-lock-disc-rotor

However now I put the new pads in, they are too close together for the rotors to fit through. The rotors don't seem thicker than normal but have I bought the wrong ones or something? Is there a trick to getting the Hy Rd's to space out?

  • New seals for a Formula RX caliper.
What and where to get. WIth cheap/free post to DK too.

  • I need some 140mm rotors. The wheels I've got are CL compatible but come with 6-bolt adapters. Can anyone recommend a rotor for about £20? Not finding any CL compatible ones for that price.

  • I like Shimano ice tech but there 25-30 quid
