It just has to stop the chain moving sideways so move the chainguide up a bit or grind off that chain catcher pin.
I would have thought it would be useful in stopping the chain going up high enough to get off the teeth. The teeth will stop the chain moving sideways.
Going up doesn't lose your chain though, only the chain moving sideways loses your chain.
