Chelmsford is fine, in fact I’d say a better Essex commuter town than any other.
I went to school there and grew up in Romford.
Brentwood is a lot more TOWIE than Chelmsford is, Chelmsford finally has its city status and while it’s not that much more diverse, it’s definitely got a greater variety of attractions and entertainment.
It’s also a much better commute into London, you’re closer to the north Essex countryside, and the good bits of Essex coast. There’s even a decent family run butcher in Broomfield, and also a place that makes jerky!
Yes the train is busy but it’s going to be like that everywhere, my boss commutes in from Chelmsford and he gets the 07:00 train to get a seat and then goes to they gym when he gets in.
