Did a bit more research. I think I'll use a Node with an overclocked GTX 970, that'll take one TB3 port on the MBP, and on the other I have an apple adapter with pass through power TB3, and a USBA 3.1 Gen 2 port, apparently it delivers the same speed as USB-C. Will just use a different cable for my Samsung T5 (USB-C to USB-A).

Edit: Nvidia vs AMD for eGPU and macOS? I read nvidia should work now under high sierra with a patch or two...is CUDA implementation also supported? Would like to run some statistics programs with CUDA implementation under macOS, if it's not overly friendly might have to look at an AMD card with OpenCL.

MBP fucked again, tried everything apart from booting from an external disk... Can't boot into safe mode for some reason, progress bar zips along then slows down to a crawl before disappearing into a grey screen... Took the ram sticks out one at a time, nothing... Won't log onto my network in recovery mode, via ethernet or wireless... Very frustrating...

Next stop is an Apple store to try and get into recovery mode there, apparently it's done the trick for other people with a similar problem...

Does it boot up as an external hdd? So you at least can get your data from it

So to the media buttons (play, pause, next, etc) doesn't work on my bluetooth keyboard, but does on my cabled. Any theories?

Haven't tried that, not sure I've got the right cable? And my gf's MBP is in an even sorrier state than mine, she doesn't take care of her nice things... My data is all backed up fine tho', not worried about that...

My big concern is what do I do next? I don't wanna shell out for a maxed out MBP, seriously considering a Hackintosh...

If you don't need mobility they can be fun. But I've had mixed experiences in terms of reliability and how much of a faff it can be to set up depending on route. Think @chrisbmx116 has the forum hack gold star. I think I wouldn't want to be relying on it for work or anything critical. Blasphemy perhaps but, depending on your intended use: Surface? iPad Pro? Less maxed out new mbp (still be faster than a 6 yr old one).

Tbh I still use our 2013 13" mbp base specs as mobile editing machines. They're great for quick cuts on the road and even hold up when we need extra edits going at the office hooked up to monitors and RAID.

My problem is I've always gone all out and bought the highest spec machine, I can't really justify that these days as I'm not making my living from it anymore... Kind of...

My mate works at Oz's biggest electronics retailer, he's gonna get me a fat discount... I've got a Thunderbolt display so can get away with a 13" machine if need be... Or maybe I get a Mac Mini and an iPad/something else? Who knows?!?

Re ^ I've pondered getting an Mac Mini loads of times, but having a laptop to move around is too useful for me. I could potentially get a mini for my home office, but then I'd need to faff with keeping files in synch etc

My MBP sounds like an airplane that's about to take off (well, not exactly) and gets really hot every time I use AutoCAD, Photoshop or similar. Or when I'm watching something while connected to an external display. I mostly have the external display connected an in use, with Spotify opened most of the time, as well as chrome and just finder etc doing normal work.
It's 16GB ram, with an i7 processor at 2.6ghz. Mid-2012 retina 15".

Is that normal or is there something that can be done to sort out that heat and noise?

have you checked activity viewer if there's a process using up 100% of the processor? If so, google what it is, there's usually a fix somewhere online

Mine is the same, same age. I assume it’s filled with 5 and a bit years of house dust and needs blowing clean so it can stay cool like it used to. I keep meaning to take it to the Apple store and get them to sort it, but haven’t had a window when I can do without it yet.

Thanks, yeah it was CEPHtmlEngine, from adobe using about 110%. Had a look online and solved it.

They won't touch it now it's 'vintage'... Went down to the Brisbane Apple store to see if I could get recovery mode working and BINGO!!

Only problem was I got the grey screen halfway through booting... Must be a hardware problem, safe mode won't work either... So annoying, at least I got the backups so I should probably be thankful for that... There are 1.5Tb of SSDs in this machine, how do I move them across to a new machine?!? I'm toying with the desktop plus laptop idea but realise that's completely stupid... Will have to bite the bullet and stump up the cash for as powerful machine as I can get... Will probably go down to a 13", enough power for Logic X? I'm assuming Adobe CC will be fine as it still ran beautifully on the old machine...

Gonna give the old one one last shot with my local Mac repair place if the Genius Bar say it's a goner... Replacement logic board could do the trick and give me another year or two of use out of the old girl...

How do I dispose of an old G5 case? I know I'll never get round to doing anything with it but I don't really want to leave it out by the bins and hope someone takes it.

Hello apple people, I have an old ipod nano, have lost the cable. Want to buy a new cable but don't know which model it is.. All I know is, it's red, and looks like this, but could be any 'generation' from the pictures I've found online. Are all the plugs the same? Any help appreciated cheers

Looks like 6th generation to me, should be standard 30 pin Apple cable.
