  • Doesn’t it drive you mad running without your hair tied back? Looks like tough going!

  • Runners of LFGSS, 20 weeks to start from scratch to running 10k? Doable? I've got a decent fitness, allways warm up on crosstrainers before lifting, cycle everyday but the last time I ran more than 5 minutes is a couple of years ago. Colleague is trying to rope me into running an Urban trail with her.

  • No problem. Any fit cyclist could do a 10k in a bit over an hour I think, assuming they don't get themselves injured, without any training. If you want to do it reasonably fast or without having to rest your legs for a few of days afterwards then that will take a bit of training but you can easily do it in 20 weeks. For comparison most marathon training plans are shorter than 20 weeks although they assume that you already do a bit of running.

I'd bash through a training plan in 8 weeks to get your fitness up and then focus on getting as fast as possible for the next 12. Plus you have loads of spare time if your training gets delayed for a week because of life.

  • Thanks for the reply. Any good plans you would recomend?

  • BUPA have some and I did their marathon one but beyond that I can't recommend anything I'm afraid. Probably much of a muchness if you just want to get your fitness up to 10k standard.

  • Cheers, gonna google 10k starter schedule and see where it leads me.

  • Just hit up your local park run for a few weeks then take it from there.

  • Look up Hal Higdon for some beginner/intermediate plans, he's pretty good. As said, plenty of time to get the leg muscles in running shape. Just focus on keeping the pace very easy and slowly building up the mileage. With 20 weeks to play with you can afford to build up to a weekly long run over race distance, and as suggested get involved in parkrun for a periodic fitness test/hard tempo run getting used to race effort.

  • Nice 5k loop in the snow. Started in almost blizzard conditions but it stopped after 10 minutes or so.

Not quite kl compliant clothing but close (I wore socks).

  • Mini-taper cut-back week has come at a good time. I'm cautious about doing hard sessions in dodgy weather (breathing even colder air, slippery surfaces) so just a decent moderate effort this lunchtime, a nice warm marathon-pace treadmill session, w/ 28.5 mins @ 17.0kph = 5M @ 5:40/m, total 9 miles incl. jogging to gym and back in many layers.

    Stay warm everyone!

  • Stay warm everyone!

I stayed upright, that'll do for me!

  • No parkrun (that I could find) in The Hague. Googling Hal Higdon now. Thanks Howard and PhilPub

  • Picked some dry and non icy roads for a mini mile on/off session at or around TMP tonight. So cold my beard froze to my face.

  • Any downsides to giving away a place at the big half? They aren't offering deferment as an option and I deffo can't do it (uni and injury). So apart from having someone run a time against my name that I'd never match (i am slow as fuck) and maybe looking better in the photos than me is there any downside?

Also anyone want a place for Sunday?

  • just don't give it to anyone too fast. my friend ran on someones number when they pulled out last minute and he was first woman to finish. oops.

  • No should be fine, people do it all the time. As long as the person isn't enlisted as an intentional mule (using that race time to then qualify you for another race).

  • There is little chance of me being at the start of the Big Half an hour beforehand. If I rock up at five mins to nine, is anyone going to stop me entering the run? I am registered and have a number, chip, etc.

  • Yeah, do try to avoid being replaced by a fast person/relatively fast person for their age/gender. Bear in mind, the race is organised by the London Marathon, so in theory they could ban someone from future events if they thought they're guilty of deliberate subterfuge.

Just about to layer up and don the trail shoes for an easy (hopefully) 5 miles on grass. Looks quite nice out, just hope my nose doesn't freeze off.

  • Ensure the emergency contact data is updated. Unlikely owt will go wrong but if it does don't want your next of kin getting call for another person.

  • Yes, also if you have to list blood type, diabetes or whatever on the entry form ensure those are correct

  • Having both given out and received numbers before I can safely say there's no issue.
Would be happy to take the number from you as it will encourage me to stick on my training plan despite the weather. I can also offer to wear a turkey hat if you fancy a chuckle when the photos come in.

  • You might miss the bag drop but you could be fine.

  • Cool, I can bring it central tomorrow, Friday or Saturday or I am in elephant & Castle in the evening.

  • Club run yesterday was supposed to be road intervals but they were worried about people slipping on the snow so I ended up running intervals around a field in the snow, with no head torch (because I'd planned on a road run on with street lights). The moon was mega-bright so it was actually pretty cool.

Bailed on my morning run today though. Used the snow and cold as an excuse to rest a few niggles.
