Small update. Back in the UK, and after a month of misery, I bought one of the Chinese leather patchers. It really isn't a scratch on the machines packed up and stored, but at least it's something to fight with until I have a workshop setup again.
Forgot to post photos before, but how sad it was to pack this stuff up like so:
