  • From what I remember and from the cached version of the pages it was described as a "solo unsupported bike race", "solo, single-stage, unsupported, 5,500km road cycling race". It always refers to the race, the only reference I could find alluding to riding apart from the set date was "These notes were created by 2017 racers and can be used by anyone wishing to tour the course at a more relaxed pace."

Reading about independent time trials it always refers to the challenge, route, ride, 'suggested start time', fastest time, completions e.g.:

A route needs no officiator; if you have time-trialled an officially mapped route, or one of your own creation, and ridden within the self-supported rules described here, it can be listed for other challengers to attempt. Some sort of evidence of the ride will be required to recognise its completion to the claimed time. Only routes with a suggested start time or a time already recorded, and openly available gps track data or mapping information, will be listed (This site can host .gpx files for the route). If you have an idea for a potential route, please step up and put down a time.

  • A TT is still a race. Key aspect is "solo". It's the fastest solo rider from point A to point B.

Every unsupported ultra race is an ITT unless it has a pairs/team aspect or you're Lael/Evan. ;0)

No idea how Australia treats TT vs. mass start races legally speaking though.

  • Jesse is cool about it being called IPWR (as in race) and people riding it at the same time, and racing it, etc. It's just he doesn't want him Dragon Face, or anyone else, to be the official organiser, most likely because there's no organiser's liability insurance.
From the POV of a rider, it means that, if you do have an accident that you believe is due to organiser negligence, you wouldn't have anyone to sue. How likely is that anyone would sue? Pretty unlikely, but it could happen or else he wouldn't be bothered about the insurance. Whether he has actually done enough to get off the hook legally as being the organiser if someone were to sue him is not certain, though.

  • I guess I see the use of solo and independent as describing different things in this context but as I also don't know much about the legalities over here and it's all hypothetical anyway (and most likely inconsequential as most legal institutions appear to hate cyclists) I think I might just have a nap instead :)

  • Well he cancelled the race. There is no race. If people ride an 'old race route' by their own choice it's nothing to do with him is it?

A lawyer might argue he didn't cancel it. In his cancellation notice he encuraged people to ride anyway, Ryan Flin, who works for Dragon Face is doing some organising, and things like the Maprogress tracker are in place. Wacker, when he tried to suggest an alternative tracker, got firmly elbowed out of the way.

Saying you've cancelled it and cancelling it are not necessarily the same thing!

  • Ride the route not race it or race it?

What organising is being done? That's not going to sit well with liability as it implies some kind of organiser. The tracker - is it a 3rd party or Dragon Face's?

  • Normally, if someone cancels something, that means it's not going to happen, but this is going to happen. So has it actually been cancelled?

There's some fairly low key stuff on Facebook. I'm in all the IndyPac groups so I see the messages. For example, the tracker is a third party which Dragon Face organised, but before the cancellation - but Shane is still communicating with Ryan, presumably in a personal capacity, about how to use it, and Ryan is posting messages with Shane's instructions on Facebook. Is that 'organising?' Is he doing it during working hours (he works for Jesse) or in the evenings in a personal capacity, etc (in which case maybe he is the organiser).

It's the sort of stuff that lawyers would argue about if it came to someone trying to sue. I've no idea which way it would go, just that it's not clear cut to me.

  • On my last day in Tenerife, and the day after I climbed to the Teide crater rim, with about 24 hours before my flight took-off I left for a solo circumnavigation of the entire island - on my fixed gear.

The start was uphill and into a strong headwind. I gave in and decided to gear down to a 42/19 because it was too much hard work. Within the first 30 minutes I was already thinking it wouldn't be possible. Bear in mind I was also carrying all my luggage for the trip so that added quite a lot of pain to my lower back. I soon pushed it out of my mind though. After the first 100km I was finally heading in a direction that wasn't against the wind. It had taken me about 8 hours though. Gear change to 47/19 - which I would keep on for the rest of the ride.

It was now starting to get dark. The north coast was flat... ish. The TF-5 highway was a whirlwind. I then began the 1000m mountain pass climb over to the south-west part of the island. I felt primal as I grinded up into the unknown darkness. It began to get a bit chilly so chucked on a bunch of layers. 20km or so of low cadence climbing and I reached the 1117m high point of the road. The stars were out of this world.

Now it was pretty much downhill back towards the airport. Front light set to max brightness and some more layers on. Hitting over 145 RPM for more than 3 minutes on one Strava segment. Google Maps then decided to give me the run around and my nose started bleeding. Eventually I rolled into Medano and had an hour or two of unwinding.

236km with ~4000m of climbing. 12 hours riding, 18 hours elapsed. After a 2-hour nap on a bench on a beach I made my flight, just.

  • Solid ride. How do you go about changing cogs re chain tension etc?

  • 15mm spanner for track nuts and 5mm hex key for chainring bolts. It's a Dolan FXE so has track dropouts. Also had to adjust the brake shoes upon changing gears too. Ain't much hassle though!

  • First full day in Melbourne today. Swung by Curve and met Rhino and Jesse. The 34C heat was a bit of a shock to the system. Met up with some internet mates and grabbed food. Randomly bumped into Sarah Hammond in an outskirt suburb on my ride back to my Airbnb at 10pm. Literally no other riders around - or many cars. Mad coincidence! Had a great chat.

Going for a 800km ride to Adelaide starting Tuesday. Although I’m worrying about my right knee. After 22 hours of sitting down on the travel here I had a weird moment where it ‘popped’ whilst I was getting up. Has been feeling off since and seems to be a little swollen compared to my left. Hoping it sorts itself out soon...

  • Sod going for an 800km ride if your knee is dodgy. Chill out and let it heal.

  • Can also confirm than Sarah is ‘vegan 99% of the time’ as discussed previously in this thread!

  • I’ll see how it goes. I’m gonna go easy but haven’t got much time left to get some solid rides in.

  • Which is exactly what you don’t need to be doing 3 weeks out.

  • Do you need to get much more riding in at this stage, don't you do tapering, no?

  • If you need a place to crash in Adelaide for a night or two or three pm me

  • It was 32 overnight. I am very tired this morning.

  • I think next week's 'high' is predicted to be -2degC. Why the cock do I live in this country?

  • All your cock are belong to us.

    No matter how mangled.
