Seat stays could be Air ?
Where the down tube joins the BB shell is similar to Max
-
• #58880
You mean Multi Shape, not multi shape. :0
Roberts were fond of mixing up the tubes, so the odds are that it wasn't built from just one set.

It‘s Max Tubing, not MS. I‘m not sure about the seatstays and the forks are definitely not max but the rest is max. Lugged max frames also use a proprietary bb, similar to the MS one. MS has assymetrical chainstays and a teardrop-shaped downtube whereas max chainstays have the same shape and the downtube is ovalised.
MS bb shell, note the assymetric chainstays shapes:
Max BB:
@Scilly.Suffolk true, mix and match was common but with lugged MS and Max frames, the dt and chainstays had to be from the same tubeset due to the proprietary bb shell. it was fairly common to use other seatstays for example. My cyfac max and the merckx mxl use round non-max seatstays for example.

Wow, it's a reversed teardrop down tube. I would have thought it goes the other way around.

If only that Roberts was a 56, but probably better for my bank account it wasn't.

For those interested in the Roberts, I messaged the seller about it's history -
I'm selling the frame on behalf of a club member who was a fine rider himself in the 80's/90's and would have been friendly with a few on the racing scene.
It came to him 3rd hand afer it was built for Spencer between 90 and 92. -

Don't know much about Cargo bikes but this doesn't seem unreasonable: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Handmade-cargo-bikes-used/222827106073?_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D48497%26meid%3Ddbae2ec0b743417abdf8dc01da102965%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D282837605914%26itm%3D222827106073&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982
Edit: the dropouts and crankset look a bit shit now I look a little closer.

What a disappointment: those wanky faux-retro lugs.

I’ve always liked ‘atom’ bikes.. I don’t think this is a very good price at all but was irked by the fact he describes it as Russian built. I always thought they were made in England (and the atom was derived from two names - to do with at-om) but can’t remember at the moment. anyone care to enlighten me?

Looks like a solid build, do like :)

• #58898
Good use of "irked".

Whys the front hanger riveted in? Seen it before, certainly on composites and some alloy frames but why on this?

If retro means something new copying something from the past - which it does -then what is "faux- retro"?
What specifically don't you like about the frame - I have never had one - is the quality of these generally low?
Maybe he was just describing the shape of the tubes.
I suggested it could be MS because (apart from Air, which this clearly isn't) that's the only other non-round tubing I know of that isn't Max.
