  • Is there a slightly cheaper option than Kone for a reusable v60 filter? We tend to use the espresso machine all weekend but don’t have time in the mornings.
Love our v60 but spend a decent whack on filters and trying to cut back on waste so would be nice to have a reusable one.

  • If you have a Home Bargains near you the Lyons ground is excellent. Works well in anything and costs 79p a bag. blends 3 & 4 are top. Not up there with my Booths £3.50 gear but perfectly good breakfast kickstart stuff.

  • Just get a bialetti stovetop or similar from TK Maxx I use mine every morning. I actually gave away my Gaggia as it was a massive pain in the arse and didn't make better coffee. If I want a long coffee just add a splash of hot water then the milk.

  • Great in bad weather too. Have some brilliant memories of nighttime rolls from my flat on Marine Parade up to Saltdean, back down to Shoreham and up to Marine Parade again.

  • I think the best are the swissgold ones; they aren't that cheap but would solve the waste issue. Or you could try cloth filters and wash them - hario make some?

  • I was actually looking into this one by Kinto today to see how it compares to the Kone. Haven't been able to find much written about it online.

Much more reasonable price if you want to give it a go though.

  • Don’t you lose the benefits of a v60 with a steel filter? Hard to get a clean crisp cup when the filter lets through a lot of finer particles

  • The trick is I need to make a shitload in a short space of time. I have a big thermos to fill along with a big travel cup.
V60 seems to be the best method for me and I’d rather avoid buying another bit of kit, I just get annoyed at using 2-3 filters in the morning by the time Liz has made hers too.

Not fussed about the best quality cup as I use cheap French supermarche beans during the week.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, will try the Kinto and report back.

  • W.t.a.f.

Never heard of it. Sounds disgusting.

  • It's apparently very nice. The egg is effectively just the filter; the coffee shouldn't taste of egg.

    If I bought/ate eggs I'd try it

  • I tried the Viet one today, it's not bad but I need another taste.

The other one I've not tried yet.

  • I know you say you don't want another piece of kit, but...

Sounds like you need a Chemex (I've got the 1.4l version) with a cloth filter (note, I've not actually used a cloth filter so can't give an informed opinion on it).

  • Chemex via cloth filters is nice. A friend who runs a café used to make them for us when he had space time. Cleaning the filter seems to be a bit of a faff though.

@edmundro I know you said you didn't want more kit but...how about a large cafetiere? Granted it won't produce the same type of flavours as a v60 but you'll be able to make a greater volume in one go though.

  • "In a tall jar, add about ¼ cup heavy cream (I use raw, very heavy cream from a grass-fed Jersey cow), a raw egg yolk, and a tablespoon of raw organic coconut oil. Add a small amount of hot coffee and mix with a hand blender. Add the remaining coffee, pour into a relaxing mug, and enjoy!"

Thanks, but I'm not going to use my daily calorie allowance up for one drink (at least one that appears to be booze free).

  • Jesus. The author obviously has a different understanding of the words "fat burning" to most people. Sounds like he's on some sort of keto diet.

  • If you don't care whether or not it tastes especially nice why not buy one of those automatic drip filter thingies for a fiver from a charity shop (or just get a new one if you don't care about the money)? As a bonus you can dump the coffee in there the night before and it'll be ready in the morning, taking even less time than the V60. And they often come with a reusable plastic filter.

  • Maffetone is a very well known sports scientist. He worked with Mark Allen (Ironman).

It sounds a bit like he's gone off the HFLC deep end much like Tim Noakes though.

  • A friend who runs a café used to make them for us when he had space time.

    Sounds relativitly complicated...

  • I have a hario carafe, a bit like a chemex, using my patent-pending chopstick stand-offs to lift the plastic cone up a few inches I can get around 1l I think. Am pretty happy with it, just wanted to loose the papers.
Will have a think this week and settle on something before my current wedge of filters runs out.

  • BERLIN

The people of ZAZZA, who also have the hip café at Schönleinstraße (where you go on sunday afternoon with your fiancée) and the smaller one at Schlesisches Tor (where you go while still under the influence sunday afternoon after clubbing) do have a new homebase where they roast their beans.
It's at Ohlauer Str. - right between the Penny and Getränke Hoffmann, under the Boulderklub -
so yea it's basically a shit location for a café, but you can get the freshest beans there and enjoy a nice cup and also talk with the owner who is happy to show you the whole joint if you like.
    Very much recommended.

  • Currently enjoying a new subscription from Crankhouse, really rate his roasts and customer service. This one is delicious 👌🏻
