Grazed over it on the "gram" whilist having wake-up coffee wondering how the bars went through the stem this morning. Now 2 hours and 3 coffees later, still wondering.
Nice work!

• #356
How on earth did you get loop bars on that stem?
-
• #357
With a welder

They used to make cheap early BMXs with a quill like that. They'd crimp the cross bar so it could fit through:

How? Fucking nervously.
22.2mm dia helped a bit

So you just opened the stem up a bit? Surely that cross brace wouldn't go through the slot in the stem?
-

I'd like to say I used science by heating it up and other fancy stuff, and at the very least thought of sliding the cross brace through instead.. but I just removed the bolt, grabbed the open end with a pair of pliers, and bent it reaaal slow. Just enough so I could squeeze the bar through at the clamping area. Then I closed it again by putting it between the jaws of my massive vice, and went nice and slow again. No signs of metal fatigue, and I've been riding it a lot since! Long live cast alu!

Big fan of the Nishiki, and of all of your other builds. I'll be picking up a dirt cheap '89 mtb and the build will most likely draw some inspiration from this thread #savetheslackbike

Cheers guys!
@Sig_Arlecchino haha #savetheslackbike is a winner! Glad to hear that, stoked to see how it turns out.

@enghoff and I are headed to Sweden for 5 days on thursday.
My adventure/touring rig got some updates.
-shortened brake hoses (without having to bleed :) )
-Titanium spin industries headset
-surly troll non sus corrected fork
-all weather brooks c17My H20 setup is dialed, just over 3L. Will have a drybag in each anything cage, frame bag with tools and stuff, gas tank for my camera, bindle rack under the seat with sleeping bag, still need a small black wald for other stuff.
Will be bringing my Canon 500d (pretty small DSLR) with a 24mm pancake lens and an 85mm 1.8 i just bought for the trip. Nice and compact setup that can produce good results!
This is great! Thinking of copying your setup, can I trouble you in asking how wide is the gap between the extensions? Wondering if I could still fit a front bag in between.
