  • Because steel is real;) and almost same specs as the original fork

  • Steel is most definitely real (having a full steel Macho Man for CX duties too), but the carbon disc fork I put on my Steamroller is hands down the best upgrade I’ve made to date - can highly recommend it!

  • Just ordered one through work, what tyres would people recommend? I want 35 or 38s, was thinking Marathon Supremes. Do want to set it up as a pathracer and urban assault. This is the OTP spec:

    Frame 100% 4130 CroMoly steel
    Forks 4130 CroMoly
Headset Cane Creek custom 5 series
    Handlebars Dimension Arc
    Stem HL 31.8
    Shifters 1 Speed
    Chainset Samox AF19-D45S, 45T
    Bottom Bracket Shimano UN-26
    Chain KMC Z610H
    Cassette Lida, 18T 3/32"
Front Brake Tektro R559 road caliper
Rear Brake Tektro R559 road caliper
    Rims Alex Adventurer 2
Front Hub Surly Ultra New 32H
Rear Hub Surly Ultra New 32H
Tyres Continental Contact 700cx32mm Front - Continental Contact 700cx32mm Rear
    Seatpost Kalloy SP-368 non-offset, 27.2x300mm, black

I assume the rims will take bigger rubber, is there a rule of thumb for how big the tyres you can get on what width rims? Long term I want to run this fixed with a disc up front, so I'm planning to swap the fork out, probably for a Straggler fork (if anyone has one?), so suggestions for a 700c disc front wheel will be welcome. Other plans would be a decent crankset (Sug 75s in black maybe) and better cockpit, probably Thomson with Easton risers.

Looking forward to getting it, been hankering after a fat-tyred fixed gear for the commute for ages.

  • I went for 32c filetread gravelkings, which were grand for commuting and road rides.

  • Spotted a deal for Marathons that looked too good to be true, 2 new for £40 so took the plunge. They are 40mm but saw people have fitted tyres that big, and since the plan is to replace the fork and use a disc brake thought I can make it work. Currently searching around for a bundle for Shimano Deore brakes.

  • Super cheap 56cm Steamroller spotted on Gumtree for anyone looking for a project https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/surly-bike/1281392124

  • Got this Friday, although not without drama as the supplier sent it to my home address not work address. After arranging to drive to Kidderminster the next day to get it from the depot I got a call saying the truck it was on had broken down in Cheltenham and could I get to it? I was in Bristol so no, but the truck was still there when I cycled home in the evening so I just grabbed it there and then. Result.

A few thoughts on the full OTP bike: the weird swooped bars need to be burnt with fire. They came off immediately and were replaced with a proper, if very ratty Easton riser. Also swapped out the stem and saddle.

The next drama came when I flipped the rear wheel to put on a sprocket, I had to flip the tyre too. Putting it back on was unbelievably hard, never known anything like it. So tight I shredding one tube then another pinching it as I tried to lever it on. Took it to the local Evans and they confirmed it is because the rims are tubless compatible. Anyway they popped off the freewheel and got a tube in there so just took it out for a maiden spin. Fitted straight away, good ride.

So I loathe the tyres and the cranks, and now I know I can run it tubless I think I will. Tyre recommendations? I’d like fatter rubber and saw some Panaracer Gravel Kings which I think you can get tubeless. Anyway first impressions are good, despite the cranks.

  • Not mine but an awesome Steamroller

  • That is exactly what I want!! you know the size?

  • This is amazing, I want one!!

    What size are those tyres?

  • Well certainly makes mine look like a pile of crap

  • Your bike is cool. Get rid of the reflective strips on the tyres and a silver chainring, would be simple and cheap fixes to your main issues I reckon.
Gravelkings are awesome, I had them on my steamroller in 32 as commuter/weekend rider

  • Well it is a work in progress. It’s not the best colour Surly have made them in, they call it ‘drink more water’ but it’s basically snot green. I have some 40mm Marathon Supreme but not sure they will fit and given the struggle getting these on I am loathe to experiment. 38mm Gravel Kings in tanwall are very handsome tyres. Also thinking of painting at least the rear braking surface.

And I have some silver Sug 75s on another bike that is shortly going to be restored so stripped that can go on there, or even some fluted Campagnolo Pistas that aren’t being used atm. I think the vintage Campags will jar on a modern build but still better that those horrible cranks. I mean the chainring is inside the spider.

  • I mean the chainring is inside the spider.

Jebers, did it arrive as a new build like that ?

  • Yarp. I think it is supposed to be that way, but it as ugly as sin. The Sugs will be on there soon. Also going to go for the Gravel Kings in 35mm as a review I read had them averaging at 38mm across a variety of rims and the local Evans have two in stock.

  • That belongs to Köpi. If he still has it. He's got more pictures here.

  • I hate to hijack a thread but does anyone have a 59cm Steamroller frame/complete bike for sale? I've certainly been inspired to build myself a multi-surface monster.

  • I'd also be interested in a 53cm frameset if anyone has one for sale...

  • Looking for a 52 / 54 roller

  • Loving rolling on the 'Roller, great geometry. The OTP cranks remain a bugbear, they are splayed like MTB cranks and feel very wide, esp when you are standing up on the bike. Must burn with fire.

  • current commuter setup. two posts above make me want to go back to wide bars...

  • I'm sure it has been covered in this thread a few times but what size Steamroller would be appropriate for me at just over 6'2"? I'm thinking of going for a 59cm but how does everyone else feel with regards to sizing?

  • I'm 5'10" and the 53cm is a perfect fit for me.

  • I'm 6' 1" and was torn between a 59cm and 56cm.

ideally if Surly did a 57/58 that would be great. I thought the 59 might be a touch large and the 56 too small.
After measuring up the old frame i was using, against the Dolan then comparing numbers i went with 56cm and it's fine. I do use a 50mm stem and riser bars as have worked out i hate drop bars and won't use them.
Think i have around 30mm of spacers and 35mm riser bars, prefer a more upright riding position like a mountain bike.
