    I guess he eats 4+ hour marathon runners.

  • Speaking of fast marathons, I wonder, is there anyone in here who can beat me for slowest marathon time? I did my first one, on a flat course on roads, in 5 hours. Was aiming for under 4h but it was an absolute disaster on the day; I knew it was going to go horribly wrong within 3 miles

    Edit: slowest time in a mostly-road marathon, that's the challenge. DNFs and mountain marathons are out.

    5:07:19 and 5:56:39

    Both were Brighton Marathon (2016 and 2017) so all road and mostly flat.

    First one I was 10kg heavier than my target (86kg instead of 76kg) but aiming for 4h30, went through half way in 2:20 feeling good and still on track at ~30km when legs emptied: https://www.strava.com/activities/548595377

    Second one I was 5kg heavier still (91kg) and even less prepared. Aimed for 4:59:59 and went through half way in 2:30 thinking I'd be ok but the heat got to me (it was bloody hot that day) and I walked from 28km: https://www.strava.com/activities/936210216

    Too much weight and not enough runs > 18 miles.

    Said I wouldn't do another marathon unless I was under 80kg and with 3 months to go to Brighton I'm 94kg and I've done one run since September due to a metatarsal stress fracture. About to cancel the hotel I had booked (I always book a refundable rate just in case) and give up on it for this year. Will enter some local half marathons to keep me motivated and ticking over.

    Also got a London Marathon place in the ballot for 2018 but I'll defer that to 2019 and then go back to Brighton in 2020 if I don't get another London place.

    So target is London 2019 and will be aiming to be under 75kg (so 20kg lighter than right now) and going for sub 4h (we'll see about aiming for 3h43 to beat my brother's best time).

  • I’ve deffo done upwards of 5hrs when doing Quintuple Ironman - that was in Mexico, topping out at 39 degrees. I think Day 3 was about 5.40 - tuff graft...

  • For me the poor performance was just shocking preparation; got no sleep, woke up too late, ate breakfast too late, was too full to drink water or eat gels, had no support so had to get the bus everywhere. I felt sick from eating/drinking too much and dehydrated at the same time. All round disaster.

    @Greenbank Oof, yeah losing weight and training at the same time is a recipe for disaster! Seems sensible to defer. Strong mental effort to keep going for 6 hours!

    @kl quintuple ironman?! I think any time is justified regardless of fitness or conditions!

    It's not a problem for me, I need to be doing the training in order to help the weight loss, but I had hoped to be starting my marathon training having already got to near my target weight. I've got 15 months until London 2019 to get sorted, so 11 months of that will be losing the 20kg before the usual 4 month plan kicks in (and I'll be entering that phase already doing monthly half marathon commutes and 40km/week average).

    Strong mental effort to keep going for 6 hours!

    6 hours is short compared to Audax cycling. I get my high boredom threshold from years of swimming. 90 minutes of staring at the bottom of a pool does not fill me with dread.

  • Really looking forward to coming down the stairs at Box Hill on my face tomorrow having seen the forecast.

  • It's at its worst when it is icy. Some of the exposed bits freeze and then it can be tricky staying on your feet.

  • I may have, literally, run into them before. Track awareness is sometimes lacking...

  • I did it in the frozen conditions last year and nearly came a cropper. My X Talons are nearing the end of their life too so that's a good sign. Cheers!

  • Went for my first run in a couple of months in this earlier in cheapo dhb road shoes. Didn't even fall over - who needs trail shoes anyway?! Snow was ankle deep at some points.

  • Cleanest my shoes have ever been after running in snow... speaking of which how do you muddy runners clean your shoes? Mine get caked three times a week, I usually leave them to dry and bang out twice and then hose them once a week but then they need loads of kitchen towel inside to soak up the excess...?

  • I bang the clumps off then rinse them in shower whilst I shower. Then dry on window above radiator.

  • I use a round pointy wire brush to give my spikes a scrub and then stuff them with newspaper to dry

  • ^ Similar to above, although have also resorted to throwing them in the washing machine (sans laces/insoles) if I've forgotten to dry them properly after a wet/muddy run and they get a bit stinky. Additional spike maintenance includes a dab of lithium grease to prevent spikes getting stuck.

    Ran a few more miles than planned this morning, 15 miles incl. 8.5 on-and-off @ ~6m/m, so I've decided another 20 tomorrow is a little unnecessary. Another 15 at an easier pace will bring up 84 for the week. Mini-taper towards the end of next week for the Southern XC.

  • Stayed upright at Box Hill. Despite horrendous underfoot conditions and a recurrence of my inability to descend I managed a 50 second-ish PB.

  • good effort. the damp and drizzle wasn't much fun.

    Needed to finish off the table names for my upcoming wedding so headed over to SE London and did Crystal Palace parkrun this morning. Good fun despite a lack of course markers which led to the leader charging off down a muddy grassy bank about half way through, while myself and another Kent Ac lad stayed on the path with some guidance from the runners behind. He still 'won'.

    Now, a MLR tomorrow or not....

  • I run them through the washing machine on a cold wash with detergent, no softener.

    If you have a washer-drier, make sure it's not set to dry. You'll remember the second time in any case.
