  • Does the forum think it's worth spending ~£60 on SSD* for an 7yo laptop with 3GB RAM** running lubuntu? Or is it better to put that money towards a 2014-15 ultrabook that already has an SSD and can probably run Windows 10?

    **upgrading RAM is too expensive.

  • Depends if it's useful for you to have an old laptop hanging around.

  • I've recently bought a Lenovo x230 (i5, 8GB RAM) from 2012. I stuck a 256GB MSATA drive (from eBay for £60ish) in it and put Win10 on it and it runs fine. Proper fast.

  • Depends on the laptop partly.

My main laptop is probably 6 years old but that is an i7 with 16GB of RAM, it runs everything perfectly fine.

I've also got a similar age laptop (which I actually bought for £60) with SSD, i5 and 2GB of RAM that runs Linux Mint fine and is pretty snappy most of the time. I'd also expect it to run Win10 OK.
